In January 2024, Football Manager marked its 20th anniversary by running a contest with Xbox, offering the chance to join Bromley FC as a tactical performance assistant. The winner was 23-year-old Nathan Owolabi, who earned an interview with Bromley’s manager. At the time, the club was playing in the fifth tier of English football. Bromley’s manager later explained that Owolabi’s different tactical perspective allowed him to make a real contribution, playing an important role in several key matches during the season. With his input, the club achieved promotion to EFL League Two for the first time in its 132-year history. It’s a rare example of someone moving from being a fan of a football simulation game to becoming part of a historic real-life promotion.
