Watch YouTubers react to this scene and you'll inevitably find someone who whines, "Why didn't they see the dinosaur as they were driving up? Why did nobody hear it walking around until now?", when the point is to reveal the Brachiosaur to us as it's revealed to the characters. The awe and wonder registering in their faces so that we register the majesty of the moment. It's about selling the EMOTION, not the logic. That's just how movies work.

@trappalachian2 I was in grad school we did a project in Camp Washington and we did a walking tour and doorknocking for a kind of half assed ethnographic neighborhood thing and at that time (early 2010s) Camp Washington was the last major remnant of the Appalachian migrants. So interesting!

It's absurd that US Representative salaries are still only $174,000. It hasn't been changed since 2009! Obviously increasing it is an optics nightmare, but it's really bad to pay our electeds so little, especially with the cost of maintaining two residences.

there's this weird notion in America that you can't have commerce in a park. To me it is the absolute worst thing about Washington DC. but it also exists all over the country.

Europe figured out concessions decades ago. Every park has a kiosk: espresso, pastry, maybe a spritz or a beer at 6pm. Small operator pays rent, city gets revenue, park gets foot traffic and eyes on the grass. Everyone wins. SF has 230+ parks and almost none of this. Dolores Park froze a Blue Bottle cart permit over community outreach complaints. Coit Tower took years of hand-wringing over a removable food kiosk (unsurprisingly: Peskin territory). Meanwhile we wonder why maintenance budgets are tight and parks feel empty at 7am. Give me a coffee kiosk in every major park. Let the concession help pay for upkeep. Let foot traffic take care of public safety. Create a third space — a square where people can meet instead of shouting at each other on social media. I’ll die on this hill. A Brown professor gave his students a take-home midterm exam. After suspecting many cheated using AI, he made the final in-person. The orange dots are the midterm scores and the gray dots are the final scores. Looks like all but 3 cheated on the midterm.
