So if I pause my stocks ISA in a falling market and transfer to the cash stop account, Reeves wants a cut, so I'm forced to completely withdraw or ride the fall. Absolute incompetence on show once again

Morrisons becomes the first major UK supermarket to stop selling sharp-pointed kitchen knives in a bid to tackle blade crime.
The supermarket chain has quietly removed all pointed blades from shelves nationwide, including popular chef’s knives, steak knives and utility blades.
Morrisons says the move is designed to make it harder for knives to be used as weapons while still stocking safer, rounded-tip alternatives.
The decision comes amid ongoing concerns over rising knife crime on Britain’s streets.
Many people are saying it’s ridiculous, arguing can still be used to slash people and does nothing to stop determined criminals from getting knives elsewhere.
Thoughts?

@llwtydeer convinced about global warming.
still not buying an AC unit ...
you would have definitely refused Noah's invite ...

@softlxnar i dislike eco zealots, however, as a "business case" for getting an AC unit, solar panels would do wonders.
when do you need AC ? when is hot and sunny.
what do you get when hot and sunny ?
free power from solar.
the only actual downside are the huge installation costs.
English

So I try to stay relatively neutral on UK vs US discourse as a Brit in the US, but one key piece of info a lot of Americans are missing is the cost of UK electricity. Even if you could afford to buy a small AC unit, the cost to run it would be astronomical

cute brute@CuteBrute718
@softlxnar so get some air conditioning

At the British Museum for 3 hours. I am the only one masking! This is wild! If you are traveling by yourself, why not mask? You have literally nothing to lose, only random strangers will judge you. The heath benefits of masking are enormous relative to cost. #COVIDisAirborne

@blazichickem @TomFranklin @Rojblake1 @TheOxfordMail @LibDemsOxon @Johnnybumfluff @_LiamWalker_ @alanvibe @scottha69720722 @FidelUK @MaCgroupUK 1. the UK is not on the list, what is the % for the UK?
2. the issue is that "all that tax" is used elsewhere ...
not very fair now, is it ?
English

@AllQuizAble @TomFranklin @Rojblake1 @TheOxfordMail @LibDemsOxon @Johnnybumfluff @_LiamWalker_ @alanvibe @scottha69720722 @FidelUK @MaCgroupUK All of that tax to cover half of necessary costs.
The economics of car dependency is completely unviable and we are seeing that in real time as roads crumble and congestion chokes productivity and health outcomes in urban areas.

@salingergregor you can't compare the efficiency of the private sector with the public one.
it is well known the private sector funds the public one.
thus, wanting better/cheaper things in the public sector can only come by taxation directly or from the private sector, indirectly.
English

who does really think it is about who owns the damn thing?? 😭
the huge benefit of it being in public hands is prices not relying on making a profit (but there would also be other things how to solve this)

@SurreyPalmsWX funny how so many people believe in global warming yet no one putting their money where their mouths are (ie: getting AC)

@TomFranklin @Rojblake1 @TheOxfordMail @LibDemsOxon @Johnnybumfluff @_LiamWalker_ @alanvibe @scottha69720722 @FidelUK @MaCgroupUK 3 out of the 4 are already paid by motorists.
nevertheless
i'd be happy to pay an insurance for each of the above.
at least i'd know where my money is going
the guv on the other hand wouldn't be happy as it couldn't fund "other expenses" without motorists' pockets
English

@AllQuizAble @Rojblake1 @TheOxfordMail @LibDemsOxon @Johnnybumfluff @_LiamWalker_ @alanvibe @scottha69720722 @FidelUK @MaCgroupUK And we will all end up worse off, unless motorists start paying the full cost of motoring including

@Hohheli @ed_hawkins the standard of measuring the temperature is my problem. which has not stayed the same in the last 100 years, yet the data is compared like it has.
do some research.
good luck
;)
English

@AllQuizAble @ed_hawkins Over one degree C warming in 100 years. Not only in UK but in the whole world. What is your problem?

English

@Hohheli @ed_hawkins really ... can you imagine 33 degrees 100 years ago ?
properly recorded, not near the business airport in the UK
curious on what was it blamed back then
(not a great deal of fossil fuels, no SUVs, no "insert any other polluter used nowadays")

@alan1181416 @collin_ruth89 there's a lot of technology "available"
but is it implemented in vehicles right now at scale and at a reasonable price for the regular consumer?

@PhilHannon what she's done, like many unfortunately do, was wait for the renewal to arrive.

English

@TomFranklin @Rojblake1 @TheOxfordMail @LibDemsOxon @Johnnybumfluff @_LiamWalker_ @alanvibe @scottha69720722 @FidelUK @MaCgroupUK 65% of pump cost is tax.
on top of that you have VED, which is not a road tax it goes to unrelated guv spend.
plus taxes on motorist related goods and services.
remove subsidies, remove motorist related taxes.
motorists will end up better off.
English

@Rojblake1 @TheOxfordMail @LibDemsOxon @Johnnybumfluff @_LiamWalker_ @alanvibe @scottha69720722 @FidelUK @MaCgroupUK Do tell me, what form does this take? Decades of freeze on fuel duty, while rail fares have rosen faster than inflation for 20 years and bus fares raised 50%.
Huge subsidies to motorists
No charge for externalities
