Sharjeel went to prison for directly naming the NRC in Assam and the Detention Camps. He was far more incisive than Umar about how India had failed Muslims since 1947. And he was unapologetic about it. It was a litmus test, because it tested the limits of leftist solidarity.

The lathicharge was political. The paper leak was political. The repression was political.

Hello @GitanjaliAngmo, do you and @Wangchuk66 own this movement that you feel that you can dictate how this movement should go forward? There were many other students who were also fasting at the same time, do you hear them talking in the same tone, as if they own the movement? And what does it mean by don't politicise? Are political parties of this country not part of the democratic space of this country? @Wangchuk66 is quite happy to deal with BJP and their leaders, and break his fast in their presence. So, then which political parties are you talking about which shouldn't 'politicise'? Are you saying that the opposition parties should not participate in this moment? And since when are ideologies not important? Did Gandhi not have an ideology? Did Nehru not have an ideology? Did Bhagat Singh not have an ideology? When BJP and its supporters are declaring the students who are protesting to be anti-national, is that not the output of an ideology? Are the textbooks that are being changed across the state not an output of an ideology? Are the RSS people who are being placed in every university and dictating how the universities should run not the output of an ideology? If you're saying that you care for the students, then you should also know that what the students are going through today is because of an ideology that has taken over the country. In fact, the most central aspect of what is happening in India today, is a fight of ideologies.

All said and done, the boy refused to shed his identity as a staunch Ambedkarite just to fit into a palatable box that Gen Z would relate to. If anything, more Gen Zs have chanted Jai Bhim in the last five days than millennials have in their entire lifetime- all thanks to him. Jai Bhim!! 🫡 @abhijeet_dipke

I’m thinking of Umar Khalid. I think of him everyday. I hope he knows he is wrong- he has not been forgotten. Countless like me keep him in our hearts and minds, we pray for him, fight for his freedom in whatever way we can. Umar Khalid walked so Gen Z could run. The battle to end his illegal imprisonment continues.

Since Abhijeet Dipke is sick I think @neha_aisa should lead at Jantar Mantar. Apart from being a phenomenal orator she has been an active part of the movement. Also the youth movement need women representative given CJP didn’t have any!

By not standing next to Sonam Wangchuk, but actually centering the students + delhi police victims, Rahul Gandhi has been much smarter about this than many who were insisting he aligns with Wangchuk.

i dont understand why neha isn't getting the center stage she deserves, she clearly has better leadership qualities, everybody who has heard this speech is moved by it, and has also led the protest by example

I hope the movement and anger on the ground is not derailed by Wangchuk and his compliance with BJP leaders for a photo-op because the AISA has been at the forefront since the very beginning and @neha_aisa can at least speak to the moment with political clarity.

No one confronts injustice and oppression with the courage and moral clarity that Indian women do. Called out Delhi Police, Prime Minister, Home Minister and Pradhan without an ounce of hesitation. No appeasement. No sanitising her words to make those in power more comfortable. Not to forget her 23 days hunger strike. None of the men from CJP have spoken with this kind of moral clarity or conviction. Instead we’ve heard assurances that they’re not anti-Modi, dictation over which slogans are acceptable and lousy excuses for why NONE of them were on the ground while others bore the brunt of the brutal crackdown. LET WOMEN LEAD.

Sonam Wangchuk does not get to decide the goals of this protest. Time and again, he has chosen to hamper the movement through his desire to control it. For example, the demands he released at midnight on 20 July, just before the march, could have effectively disrupted it, if it wasn’t for the enthusiasm of the students. And if today he was going to end his fast without his demands being met, he should have done so with the young protesters who were fasting alongside him, not through BJP leaders. That leaves two possibilities: He was acting in the BJP’s interest. He wanted BJP leaders to end his fast to boost his own political leverage and ego. Either way, the protest is bigger than Sonam Wangchuk.
