If there's one institution you should never pick a fight with during a protest, it's the police. They can tolerate slogans, abuse, & political pressure. But the moment one of their own is beaten, humiliated, or seriously injured, it becomes personal for the force. That's when they stop looking at it as just another protest & start treating it as an attack on their own. Notice how many radical Islamist groups stayed away from the CJP protest after the CAA protests. The brutal lynching of IB officer Ankit Sharma & the subsequent police crackdown sent a clear message. Peaceful protest ?? Awww... there was a complete absence of basic empathy, so don't come at me with "muh democracy" or "muh right to protest."

Staying, taking responsibility, fixing what went wrong, and bringing lasting change to the system is the harder job. That, to me, is true remorse and accountability. But in a country where symbolism often gets rewarded more than outcomes, you are sometimes better off riding a buffalo to your village and pleasing everyone than building the road that transforms the village and arriving there in a Mercedes. We often applaud the spectacle of sacrifice more than the difficult, unglamorous work of actually fixing things.

You can have a dehati like Lalu become a national political force. You can have film stars become chief ministers, riding on larger-than-life populist images built through cinema. But imaginining a successful businessman running the country feels unacceptable. Even our political aesthetics reflect this. A politician may be enormously wealthy and corrupt, but he must look simple, always in kurta, sari, hawai chappal. A suited-booted, openly wealthy businessman asking people to elect him Prime Minister would immediately be viewed with suspicion. But that doesn't mean businessmen have remained outside politics. Powerful business interests have always found ways to influence governments and get what they want. The difference is that they can exercise that influence from behind the curtain, without directly facing voters or being held publicly accountable for governing outcomes.
