The privileged lot has no idea about how difficult the lives of the poor are. In places like Gurugram, workers pay more rent — per square feet — than their employers living in fancy apartments. And these are essentially hovels with no windows.

In July’24, Haryana govt notification allowed stilt + 4 floors buildings even on unapproved plans. The notification was challenged in the high court that ordered a physical inspection and stayed the notification. In one of the poshest sectors in gurgoan, where houses sell north of half a million dollars, upon verification as part of this case, it was found that the 12 metres road had shrunk to 4 metres and the colony lacked infra for sewage, sanitation, garbage disposal and blocked aquifers. In this colony, the notification wanted more to be built without any audit of infra capacity. This is a text book example of the less talked about aspect of India’s sanitation challenge i.e town planning is wired to design cities for a filthy outcome. It does so to exploit the only monetisation tool they have to sustain- stamp duties.
