@TVGrimReaper @Mike22840815 I'd say that the industry would inevitably take a heavy hit both from the subscription and the advertisement side, but they weren't ready for competition. There were clear signals of vulnerabilities(People hated the cable industry in the 1990's) even before the Blackberry.

Analysts fail to note that there are now ~60 million channel bundle subscribers vs. ~100 million 10 years ago. That same ratings collapse has happened across all linear TV. YouTube and podcasts 🤦🏻‍♂️.

As Stephen Colbert hosts the last episode of The Late Show, analysts attribute the ratings collapse of late-night talk shows to the rise of YouTube and podcasts (@felixgillette / Bloomberg) (Visit Mediagazer dot com for the link and full context!)

@TVGrimReaper Relying on a set of buyers that need your product but can't afford to pay and on another set of buyers that theoretically can afford to buy but that doesn't need your product doesn't look like a good arrangement to increase the prices for those TV rights. Tough job there.

Hardly a revelation by the notable cocaine enjoyer. The NFL’s going to have to work hard to convince deep pocketed tech companies to pay a lot more. If they fail, they’ll have to settle for the same legacy buyers who are becoming impoverished and will be able to pay much less.

Opinion: The NFL is “tempting fate” as it pushes for a major reset of its media rights deals. The league is reportedly seeking roughly 50% increases as early talks begin—potentially lifting CBS’s Sunday package to more than $3 billion annually.

@Mark_Sutton2 @TVGrimReaper No, three billion every year is still a considerable amount of money even for Google, Apple, Amazon there are good reasons why Netflix doesn't have a full-fledged sports division. The NFL in a few years will have to learn to live with less money.

@TVGrimReaper Seems like "astronomical" amounts to these tech companies (Amazon, Apple) is more like "pocket change" to them.

@FrontRowBrian @TVGrimReaper Disagree. I think a company like Apple would absolutely pay to get its hands on ESPN’s inventory. The real red pill here is for Disney shareholders - ESPN has traditionally been among their best performing assets.

ESPN continues to be a ~zero growth business, with declining profitability. Somebody ask Pitaro how he plans to change that in their next puff piece interview.

@LectricSheep @TVGrimReaper I would argue *networks* as a business have zero or negative *long* term value - the ice cube is melting, but it's still there for some time. Some of the *brands*, specially CNN, are worth more than zero, even if that's not enough to build sustainable businesses.

Warner Bros. Discovery Networks revenue down 8%, earnings down 9%. The melting ice cube in action! Quite a prize that Paramount won.

@austiny007 @TVGrimReaper The issues for Nielsen and TV are the same, having a lot of viewers that aren't paying attention or paying to watch the "content" doesn't mean a lot. That doesn't mean that any different measurement or company would come up with much different numbers.

@TVGrimReaper A true grim perspective to have this as a takeaway from these figures. I’m a big fan of yours. But maybe it’s time to be the reaper of Nielsen and the ever moving goalposts they give themselves. When are we going to just stop giving them the benefit of the doubt?

@TVGrimReaper @Jamesshaun002 @brklotz Brazil, where Paramount has its own streaming while it sells its shows to the big legacy, local TV network, that's experiencing the same market pressures that they are, and both are in the middle of a turf war between Amazon and Netflix, is a good example of this problem.

@Jamesshaun002 @brklotz And that's going away, as most of the legacy businesses launch their streaming platforms outside the US. You can't sell your shows to the local TV networks, when your streaming platform competes with them!

Traditionally, CBS churned out procedural drama episodes, and then cashed in by selling them in syndication to the likes of TNT and USA. But the $ is gone from cable, and there’s no profit in putting them on Paramount+. Not sure how they’re still making as many as they are.

@sherman4949 Netflix reliance on international subscribers means that they can't make large investments in sports, even if they can't expand their subscriber base without them. They also have an ice cube problem, even if their ice cube is more resilient.

"Our sports strategy is pretty much unchanged," Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos says, reiterating Netflix is mostly interested in big events. But he said say "pretty much!" There's some wiggle room! "We are in discussions right now" with NFL to "expand" that relationship.

@sherman4949 We’re at the peak for value of sports rights. When legacy distribution collapses, rights owners will be standing around looking at Netflix & Amazon (they better hope Disney and WarnerMount are there) , who has all the leverage then?

@TVGrimReaper It's honestly astonishing how much Comcast has their head up their own asses with Peacock. Yeah, let's just keep it local to the US with no real potential for subscriber growth anymore while losing so much fucking money.

@chriskilroy @TVGrimReaper It won't. Sports rights are too expensive, they have too much debt, organizing their international sports operations would be complicated under good management(See Europe, with TNT Sports, Paramount+ and Eurosport).

@TVGrimReaper Obviously WBD has data on what shoving low quality long tail (d+) content into HBO, so will be interesting to see if they try to just make HBO massively bigger but keep HBO branded stuff seperate in a certain way. (They should) The combined sports rights will be interesting

Paramount confirmed today it wants to merge HBO Max and Paramount+ into one service, but "HBO should stay HBO," David Ellison said. One thing I learned -- HBO chief Casey Bloys' contract runs out in 2027. Show him the Zaslav money, David! cnbc.com/2026/03/02/hbo…

@andkenbr @trumwill NYT "[the judge] has emerged as one of Brazil's most powerful... figures after the country's supreme court enshrined him with expansive powers to crack down on threats to democracy online"x.com/LauraPowellEsq…
Laura Powell@LauraPowellEsq

The NY Times unironically describes someone wielding unchecked power to restrict speech and attack political opponents as “cracking down on threats to democracy online.” This article only makes sense if you understand “democracy” means global totalitarianism and “far right” means anyone who opposes it. Scary how familiar Brazil’s playbook is. These left-right distinctions are now meaningless, and all that matters is fighting authoritarianism. Few people have had a larger singular impact on what is said online in recent years than the Brazilian judge. He has emerged as one of Brazil’s most powerful—and polarizing figures after the country’s Supreme Court enshrined him with expansive powers to crack down on threats to democracy online, amid fears about a far-right movement led by Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s former president. Ahead of Brazil’s 2022 election, the court empowered Justice Moras to unilaterally order the takedown of accounts he deemed threats. He has since wielded that power liberally, often in sealed orders that do not disclose why a given account was suspended. He has ordered X to remove at least 140 accounts, most of them right-wing, including some of Brazil's most prominent conservative pundits and members of Congress. Some of those accounts questioned Mr. Bolsonaro's 2022 election loss and sympathized with the right-wing mob that stormed Brazil's Congress and Supreme Court. Justice Moras has also led multiple criminal investigations into Mr. Bolsonaro and voted to deem the former president ineligible to run in Brazil's next presidential election. Those efforts have made Justice Mores a hero of Brazil's left and the No. 1 enemy of Brazil's right.
