@bestofStarTrek A warp drive, as long as it comes with manuals and explanations for all the bits needed to use it. That way we'd get FTL, but also the antimatter power system. And a warp core ejection system that only works when the plot doesn't need it to not work.

What a horrible thing to say. I love older people. You really are a nasty one. This is what an infiltrator looks like, folks. Dont alienate our older generation. They deserve our love and respect.

@TheGoldenDays The design wasn’t the problem. The x86 version was woefully slow and unreliable. My work switched us onto the x86_64 version on new machines and it was fine.

Windows Vista was heavily criticized, but looking back, the Aero glass design was beautiful. Was it actually bad or just ahead of its time?

@igor_os777 Some of us remember ed very well. On many old UNIX systems, when a file needed edited in single user mode you were often on a serial console without cursor control. A line editor was all you had, and usually it was all you needed.

grep: Born from a Text Editor Nobody Remembers grep — the indispensable Unix search tool — didn’t start life as a standalone command. Ken Thompson lifted it wholesale from ed, the original Unix line editor, where g/re/p meant “globally search for a regular expression and print matching lines.” The command proved so useful that Thompson wrapped it in its own binary overnight. Ed, meanwhile, faded into obscurity — remembered today mostly by people who accidentally launch it, can’t figure out how to quit, and have to kill the terminal in shame. grep‘s descendants (egrep, fgrep, ripgrep) now populate virtually every operating system on the planet. Ed remains unavailable for comment.

@MikeTappTweets It is somewhat turbulent at home though, isn't it? You know, the place the electorate lives. Right now it feels strikingly similar to Strong and Stable Theresa May, and I suspect it'll end similarly.

@DamianLow3 One of them was in the Government at the time. It is reasonable and normal for former members of the Cabinet to be under greater scrutiny than opposition party members. As of right now, Farage is ‘just’ an MP. Rayner was Deputy PM with a housing brief.

Rayner has been cleared, but the media ran 30 front pages in total, averaging 4 front pages a day during the peak of the story. Farage's £5 million gift has had two front page stories. Why would there be such a difference in reporting standards for the two?

Is it just me or has this been a super duper underwhelming 60th anniversary of Star Trek? No new shows/movies greenlit. 1 cancelation behind another already established cancelled show. No good merch other than some original series bridge playsets that virtually no one will buy…

@bestofStarTrek The OG. The D's demise was an action scene - ok, an extraordinarily well-done action scene! - and, crucially, Picard wasn't present. The Constitution's end was a funeral pyre watched by Kirk and McCoy/Spock. It was beautiful.

I welcome HMRC’s conclusion, which has cleared me of any wrongdoing. I have been exonerated by HMRC of the accusation that I deliberately sought to avoid tax. When purchasing a home of my own with a mortgage, I did not own any other property and had no personal financial interest in the court-instructed trust set up to manage my son’s financial award. I was advised by experts that I should pay stamp duty at the standard rate. I set out to pay the correct amount of tax. I took reasonable care and acted in good faith, based on the expert advice I received, and HMRC has accepted this. I have always sought to act with integrity, and I believe politicians should be held to high standards - that is why I resigned from government and cooperated fully with HMRC.  I wanted to ensure that I paid every penny that I owed, and have done so. I am relieved that my family can now move on - and that I can get on with my job.

@implausibleblog Those self-satisfied smiles seem a little out of place after an absolute shellacking at the polls and the ensuing party chaos. Luckily fewer and fewer people are listening.

@kennygfrederick Just how badly do Labour need to lose at the polls before its supporters realise that they are also losing the argument? As things stand, the only thing that will prevent a populist government is the populists themselves. Labour are making themselves irrelevant.

a Python list isn't a list. it's an array of pointers. calling it a "list" is the most misleading name in programming. it's not cache-friendly and also it's not compact. it's an array of addresses scattered across RAM. numpy fixes this by doing what C does: storing the actual values contiguously.

Shocking that the Government has banned a sitting ECR MEP @D_Tarczynski from Britain. Of course if Starmer got his desire to rejoin the EU - he wouldn't be able to do this. I will be interviewing Dominik for The Liz Truss Show on Friday.

What is the point in banning in-person attendance of a rally? Video conferencing does in fact exist, there are big screens at the rally, and the publicity draws attention to those who've been banned.
