“Heavy heart” is a good place to start. After Golf Channel, I launched a travel and lifestyle production company we called Dawn Patrol Productions. That was a month before Covid hit. As I explained in the last Fire Drill Podcast, that forced the first of many pivots. Alan, Alex Upegui and I set out to establish a modern media company: read, watch, listen, long, medium and short stories. We loved and hired Ryan French, Laz Versalles, Michael Bamberger, Colt Knedler, Jordan Perez, as well as a team of talented shooters, editors and designers. We used investment to invest in people and production. Too big too fast was a fundamental flaw to our model. Hard lessons were learned, friends were lost along the way, we downsized and continued to pivot until the concept of a “Collective” was no longer a viable option. Alan and I remain friends and I will always be a fan of his dogged reporting and his ability to write. He’s an incredible talent. Personally, I have shifted focus back to Ginella’s Journeys, Bonfire events, buddies trips, working with courses and resorts to document new builds, renovations and restorations. I will continue the Fire Pit Podcast, I remain a board member of Youth of Course and I’m exploring additional opportunities working with brands to help tell their stories. Like Alan and others who have been along for this journey, I’m proud of the stories we’ve told, how we’ve told them and the impact we’ve had on the golf world and beyond. I’m humbled in ways I did not know were possible, I’ve learned more about business than I could’ve ever imagined, and I appreciate the people who invested in us both financially and spiritually. Thank you. And thank you again! I remain a dedicated husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend, and I’m grateful for a community like we have at Goat Hill Park. I’m a storyteller at heart. I look forward to telling more stories. Onward...

With a heavy heart, me and @MattGinella are shuttering the Fire Pit. Super proud of all the content we put out over the last 3 years but we couldn’t make the business hum. I learned a ton, including: It’s an almighty grind to help run a company and I just wanna type, man.

The Fire Pit Collective has been fans of, and friends with, the Bishop brothers and Dormie Workshop for years. Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Dormie is a sponsor of the Fire Pit and Fire Drill podcasts. They supply us with quality leather goods for our Pit Shop, and this year they made custom leather headcovers for @MattGinella’s 10th annual buddies trip, the Uncle Tony Invitational. Ginella’s uncle’s nickname was “Tone Dog,” which is why the logo on the trophy is a dog and the motto of the gathering is: “For the love of the Dog.” Tony Kielhofer died in 2017 but his profound influence on Ginella’s golfing life remains; the traditions of the UTI and the camaraderie among Ginella’s collection of friends is proof of that. Kielhofer lived long enough to enjoy several trips to @BandonDunesGolf , by far his favorite golf destination in the world. Some of his ashes were spread near the bench overlooking the Punchbowl putting course, his favorite spot to watch the sunset. This year’s trip was at @Sand_Valley , which Uncle Tony would’ve also enjoyed. And he certainly would’ve loved these headcovers. Uncle Tony loved a deal so for 15% off your next Dormie purchase, go to dormieworkshop.com and use promo code FIREPIT15. And enjoy yet another #mandatorygolffriday. Uncle Tony was often found on Fridays fleecing his nephew and others at Oakmont Golf Course in Santa Rosa, Calif.🔥🔥🔥

@willbardwell I’ve been doing it all wrong. Didn’t realize their gear was only intended for the course.

Congrats to my friend @AlanShipnuck on this in-depth look at the most turbulent era in recent sports memory. The best non-fiction informs and entertains - Alan does both while also exhaustively reporting in real-time. A captivating business tale on disruption, greed, and ego.

In the real world, no one can possibly understand (or care about!) the pressure, nerves, joy and relief of the buddies trip. Last night at the Sandbox @Sand_Valley I had a 5-foot slider to win our annual putting championship, with my pards Hank Ashworth. Unfettered bliss!

For a typist, among the most satisfying days of your entire life is the first time holding a book you’ve poured your life into. These beauties just arrived and I couldn’t be more thrilled!

Draft party!! It’s the 34th year of GinellaFFL. Started in 1990/91, the first few years of stats were by hand out of USA Today. I faxed weekly results. Draft party in San Diego. Golf at @goathillpark. Scramble format. Keeps everyone involved, even non-golfers. I know what you’re thinking… We grandfather in the Thursday games. Gives us most info possible and more owners/GMs can fly in when draft is not on Labor Day weekend. We play Team QBs, a modified scoring system—1/2 a point per yard, running, passing or catching, 20 points for a TD, offense or defense. We play team defense, again, a modified scoring system. Points for sacks, picks, tackles for a loss, and points allowed are a factor. QBs go early in our league. Cincy, KC and BUF QBs went 12, 16 and 17 in our draft. TEs are wide receivers. We threw out kickers and the random nature of their scoring a long time ago. Good riddance! Thankful @CBSSports accommodates our scoring system. We start: *Team QB RB1 RB2 WR1 WR2 WR3 Flex Team Def 12 teams, snake draft, 18 rounds. Top six in playoffs, bottom six play for where they pick in next year’s draft. The two best records advance to playoffs and the top four points scored, not already in by record, advance. Best record and top scoring team get a bye. There’s a simultaneous survivor bet throughout the season. Low team each week is out, top team gets immunity. Entry is $250 and you get $250 to spend on free agents. Everything spent on free agency goes into the pot. Add one, drop one. *Any league that doesn’t play Team QBs is not a league. When an NFL team loses their starter in the first quarter, they don’t automatically lose the game, they play the backup. Team QBs is the only thing that makes sense. Best friends from grade school, high school, college, post-college and friends of brothers. We also have social members, who are in for golf and the party. An incredible hub of friendship, camaraderie and memories. And we’re all tied for first. Let the angst and anguish begin…

Incredible stretch at @CarrGolfTravel’s Father/Daughter at Waterville. Kaili played her first 18 holes, first tournament, had her first shot of whiskey, hunkered down in her first Shebeen, danced around a piano in a pub, just missed net eagle on the last putt of her last hole and wants lessons as soon as we get home. Lots more on this special event coming soon at @firepitstories.🔥 (All pics by @melmaclaine)

When my Mom was a county supervisor, one of her passion projects was keeping alive a hospital in the poorest part of Salinas. Today they named part of it after her! Such a touching exclamation point on a life well lived.
