We’re pleased to share 2 new papers from the WashU H&N Tumor Center @SitemanCenter We explored the debate of UL vs. BL transoral surgery for tonsillar SCCa through a WashU cohort and meta-analysis. Is it time we stop routinely removing the non-diseased tonsil? @WashUMedENT

Very useful data. Now, it's time to generalize these conclusions to the unknown primary diagnostic work-up. The likelihood that a contralateral tonsil cancer generated the malignant adenopathy is too trivial to warrant bilateral tonsillectomies to find the primary, and oropharyngeal stenosis is more common following the more extensive surgery and radiation.
JAMA Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery@JAMAOto

Systematic review and meta-analysis: Omitting contralateral elective extracapsular tonsillectomy in tonsillar SCCa is safe, with low metachronous contralateral second primary tumor rates and no difference in survival outcomes. ja.ma/4fEMXj1 @andrewpete_

Congratulations to @WashUMedENT resident Dr. Andrew Peterson on winning the top poster award for the American Head and Neck Society at COSM in New Orleans. His data helps settle the debate of unilateral vs. bilateral transoral surgery for tonsil SCCa @andrewpete_

We learned yesterday of the passing of Dr. Brad Warner @BradWarnerMD @WashUSurgery @STLChildrens . He was a giant in the world of Pediatric Surgery, who amongst all his accolades was the 64th President of the Society of University Surgeons @UnivSurg . surgery.wustl.edu/on-the-passing… Brad was one of the best - phenomenal surgeon, leader, scientist, educator, mentor, and one of the kindest people one can ever know. He was an amazing pillar of support to so many of us across the nation. physicians.wustl.edu/items/brad-war… Official tributes are forthcoming. Our deepest condolences to his wife Dr. Barbara Warner, his daughters Lauren and Emily, and to his cherished family and friends. May his memory be eternal 🙏🏾 @colinalexmartin
