Having an additional need doesn’t automatically mean… - Children can’t behave - We shouldn’t have high expectations of children - Children can’t achieve We need to be careful here & not impose glass ceilings via our inner bias.

Being firm & consistent with behaviour doesn’t mean you don’t care about children nor does it mean you are ignoring needs. But sometimes children just need clearly upheld boundaries and to hear the word no.

A career in school leadership—whether as a headteacher or in another senior role—is a vocation, but it is also a profession. While the work is essential, it should not demand personal sacrifice at the expense of our health or well-being. We are not obligated to break ourselves for the sake of our schools. It is entirely possible to lead effectively—with impact and integrity—without compromising our own sustainability.

Conflict isn’t the problem… avoidance is. What we don’t say builds pressure. What we don’t challenge creates stress. Handled well, conflict brings clarity, strengthens relationships, and leads to better decisions. So…are we avoiding it, or learning to use it?

The environment children need in order to flourish is one that is: A) safe B) calm and predictable C) dignified and purposeful That can look like a lot of things, but it cannot look like anything. The classrooms I visit normally reveal to me in ten minutes if they satisfy those basic criteria.

A formal evaluation should never be your first visit to a classroom. If it is, skip the evaluation. Leave a Post-it of Praise note instead. Notice something good. Name something specific. Let the teacher know you saw the work, the heart, and the effort before you ever try to score it. Because trust has to be built before feedback is ever received.
