Charlie Munger built a $200 billion empire working backward from failure.
Instead of chasing the infinite variables that might work, remove the finite ones that won't.

We went from no budget to hiring Orama, the Rolls-Royce of executive search firms. Here's what changed our mind.

Not a penny of Jeff’s money went into our business. The only money that’s ever come into this business is revenue from customers. And the only money that’s ever come out of this business are profits on that revenue.
Jeff did buy some early founders shares from us when we weren’t worth much. That money went directly to us, not the the business, but it’s not the kind of money that could buy the garage or those cars in it.

No VC money, no massive enterprise accounts, no sales teams, no growth hacking, no retention specialists ... Just exceptional, self-service, word-of-mouth project management software for small/medium-sized businesses. Just Basecamp.

The Model Y is the superior transportation appliance, but when the mission is about more than getting from A to B, there's still no beating the internal combustion engine. Collecting a stable of great cars is one of the finest rewards of entrepreneurial success.

"We lost on price" is one of the most common phrases in sales. It's also rarely the real reason.

@RooktoRep really well put 👌.
this is the thing that the majority of our industry doesn't understand...
AEs be out selling call recording software in a wfh pandemic and preaching like they are selling infrastructure transformation to a global bank.
there are levels to this game!

I genuinely don’t think the average person realizes how smart you need to be to succeed as an Enterprise Account Executive selling a highly technical product.
Take something like cloud infrastructure.
You need to understand an incredibly complex environment, communicate it clearly to both technical and business stakeholders, and have the soft skills to navigate a long, high-stakes sales process.
From prospecting and discovery, to building a champion. Forecasting, running a POC, coordinating in-person meetings, negotiating pricing, and navigating legal and procurement.
It’s a grueling and tense process that requires intelligence, emotional awareness, strategic thinking, and the ability to stay composed when a lot is on the line.
There’s a reason the best enterprise AEs are paid so well.

Success is vague. Failure is concrete.
Charlie Munger built $200 billion working backward from what kills you, not forward from what might work.

Most leadership decisions are two-way doors. Act on instinct if you can reverse.
But if you can't, slow down to speed up.
