It is really an interesting lesson that the Chinese ecosystem had collectively rejected a proprietary solution for pure market reasons, even while an open alternative did not exist yet. “Nobody else gets to rent-seek on my users. Nobody else vendor-locks them”.

One detail from this piece I keep thinking about. ByteDance built an AI agent that reads your screen and taps your apps. Super apps killed it in 48 hours. OpenClaw does more. Every incumbent embraced it. The difference is who sits in the middle. That architectural distinction will define the next phase of China’s AI competition.
