An Islamic school in Australia that forces students to pray is tracking the menstrual cycles of female students so that teachers know when they’re “unclean” and must be kept out of the mosque — and so as to be sure that they’re not using their cycle as an excuse to avoid prayer. This is disgusting, degrading, and absolutely unacceptable. Forcing students to attend and pray at a mosque is bad enough, but tracking young girls’ menstrual cycles as if they’re so many farm animals is despicable. The worst part is that the government of Australia is allowing this abuse of young girls — because that’s exactly what this is — in order to pander to a community whose religion preaches the inferiority of women. This, let’s remember, is the same country in which a woman was judicially punished for creating an app for women and denying access to a man. Australia has become a country that has no problem with forcing young girls to accept sex-segregation and sexual abuse so as to pander to a misogynistic death cult, but when women want to do something positive for themselves, the government can’t put a stop to it fast enough. That’s it. Be real with me. This is not representation of autistic lives. It’s aesthetic labelling. Autism reduced to a single, sanitised visual cue that has become popularised through social media stereotypes. Headphones function as a shorthand for ‘sensory sensitivity’, which is then flattened into ‘autism’. This is branding and commodification of autism. “Autism is where you have headphones on and a vacant look in your eye.” I mean. Are we being serious? Nothing about this doll reflects the material realities of autistic people’s lives. There is no engagement with power, exclusion, or harm. Autism is treated as something you accessorise, not something that shapes how you are treated by schools, employers, healthcare systems, families, friends, partners, police, courts, prisons, or the state.
