Bloom filters. A giant bit array in memory where every existing username gets hashed and flips some bits to 1. To check yours: hash it, check the bits. -Any bit is 0? Definitely free. -All 1s? Probably taken, confirm against the real DB. 2 billion usernames in ~2 GB of RAM. Microsecond lookups. Why not a hash set? That’s 60-100 GB. Bloom filters trade a ≈1% false positive rate for 30x less memory, and never give false negatives. They’ll never say “available” when it’s taken.
