Potholes are the new weather: just had 20 minute conversation in tyre shop about all things pothole. It was sleeting outside but we only cared about potholes. Riveting!

The great Val Low, whom I have known and, off and on, worked with for decades, left The Times today, after a magnificent 15 years as royal correspondent. A legend, a talent, and a delightful man who thoroughly deserved his big, warm send off.

Delighted to say I'll be parliamentary press gallery chair next year, succeeding the marvellous @sam_lister_. Big shoes to fill! Like Sam, I'll be on the hunt for top guests for press gallery lunches, so will be fielding invites from January...

Well, I’m having my first experience of smart motorway issues. Blown tyre in the fast lane. Very carefully limped my way to the refuge. Called the SOS phone and NOBODY ANSWERED. Tried twice. It rang and rang and rang, but no reply.

Just seen @Dannythefink at @BuxtonFestival talking about his book Hitler, Stalin, Mum & Dad. Riveting. Poignant. Incisive. Not a bad way to spend a rainy old day in the Peak District.
