The automatic maid by Philon of Byzantium (3rd century BC) is considered the first functional humanoid robot. It poured wine and water into a cup using an ingenious system of counterweights, vacuum pipes, and air pressure.

The Temple of Hera at Selinunte, Sicily. The Temple of Hera at Selinunte, also known as Temple E, stands as one of the finest examples of Doric architecture in the western Greek world. Located on the eastern hill of the ancient city of Selinunte on the southwestern coast of Sicily, it was built between approximately 460 and 450 BC during the height of the colony's prosperity. Selinunte itself was founded around 628 BC by Greek colonists from Megara Hyblaea, making it the westernmost Greek colony in Sicily. The city flourished through trade and agriculture, becoming wealthy enough to construct an impressive complex of monumental temples, of which Temple E is among the most celebrated. The temple measures roughly 67 by 25 meters and follows a peripteral plan with six columns on the short ends and fifteen on the long sides, totaling 38 columns. Each column rises about 10 meters and displays the classic Doric features of fluted shafts and simple cushion capitals. The structure includes a pronaos, a cella, and an opisthodomos, the standard tripartite arrangement of Greek temples from this period. Scholars attribute the temple to Hera, the queen of the gods and protector of marriage and family, based on votive inscriptions and the discovery of related sculptural fragments, though some debate persists about the precise dedication. The temple was famous in antiquity for its metopes, carved relief panels that decorated the entablature. Four well-preserved metopes from Temple E survive and are now displayed at the Archaeological Museum of Palermo. They depict mythological scenes including the marriage of Zeus and Hera, Heracles fighting an Amazon, Actaeon being torn apart by his hounds at the command of Artemis, and Athena slaying the giant Enceladus. These sculptures represent a sophisticated transitional style between the Archaic and Classical periods, showing increasing naturalism in anatomy and drapery. Selinunte's prosperity came to an abrupt end in 409 BC when the Carthaginian general Hannibal Mago besieged and destroyed the city. Although partially resettled, it never recovered its former glory and was finally abandoned around 250 BC during the First Punic War. A massive earthquake, likely in the medieval period, toppled the temple along with most of the other structures at the site. Beginning in 1957, Italian archaeologists undertook an ambitious anastylosis, the careful reconstruction of the temple using its original fallen stones. Today Temple E stands largely re-erected, offering visitors a powerful sense of its original grandeur. It is the only major temple at Selinunte to have been substantially reconstructed and remains the centerpiece of one of the largest archaeological parks in Europe, covering some 270 hectares along the Mediterranean coast.

Hellas/Greece and the Hellenes gave us everything. Culture, language, myths, architecture, art, knowledge, and laid the foundation for Western civilization. They deserve better. Shame on Nolan.

🎦🧠Information Warfare via Cinema Propaganda surrounding the upcoming Odyssey film continues through the systematic distortion of the ancient Hellenic epics. The actress cast as Helen recently declared that the story is “not history but a mythological tale.” This claim is misleading. While the narrative certainly contains mythological elements, it fundamentally recounts the history, ethos, values, and customs of a specific people: the ancient Hellenes. Helen of Troy was a Spartan queen. She was not a neutral or universal figure her identity, heritage, and cultural context were clearly defined. The Trojan War itself was a real historical event, the core of which has been corroborated by archaeological evidence. Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are foundational works of Hellenic civilization, deeply rooted in the geography and culture of the Eastern Mediterranean. They are not African, Near Eastern, or universalist myths detached from their origin. They belong to a specific time, place, and people. This is a clear case of information warfare. Certain academic circles, particularly in American universities, driven by ideological agendas and what appears to be a deep-seated inferiority complex toward classical Western civilization, are attempting to downgrade and deconstruct Greco-Roman antiquity. Their goal is to sever these works from their Hellenic roots and repurpose them for contemporary political narratives. We are not obliged to apologize for our heritage. Whether the epics appear problematic, patriarchal, or insufficiently diverse to modern sensibilities is irrelevant. The Iliad and *Odyssey are ours. They do not require external validation or permission to exist as they are. Hellenic civilization has endured for over 3,500 years. It remains here and it will continue.

This is an ancient Greek votive relief depicting Achilles in a chariot and his mother, Thetis, alongside a procession of warriors. Found in Thessaly, Greece, it dates back to around 400 BC and is currently housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

@OskarJaeger Turkey, like every other country in the world, is also entitled to a 12 nautical mile territorial sea. The reference to 3 miles concerns island sovereignty, as established under the Lausanne Peace Treaty: islands beyond 3 miles from the Turkish coast belong to Greece.

‼️ Τούρκος ψαράς μπαίνει επίτηδες σε Ελληνικά χωρικά ύδατα για να ψαρέψει έξω από Ελληνικά νησιά στο Αιγαίο και προκαλεί το Ελληνικό λιμενικό να εμφανιστεί για να τον διώξει. Μετά τραβάει βίντεο τις πράξεις του, βάζει Οθωμανικά εμβατήρια ως μουσική, φωνάζει στους λιμενικούς: "φύγετε! Χτύπησε τους!", βρίζει στα βαρβαρικά και μετά τα ανεβάζει τα βίντεο στο διαδίκτυο. 🇹🇷Οι Τουρκικές κυβερνήσεις έχουν δημιουργήσει ολόκληρες γενιές ψυχοπαθών ανθρώπων που θεωρούν ότι τους ανήκει ξένη γη και θάλασσα "επειδή απλά είναι Τούρκοι". Ο ψυχοπαθής αυτός θα προκαλέσει κάποια μέρα ατύχημα και έτσι θα δημιουργηθεί θερμό επεισόδιο μεταξύ Αθήνας και Άγκυρας για έναν χαζό. Γιατί η Τουρκία δεν σταματάει τους ψυχικά ανώμαλους πολίτες της από τα δημιουργούν προβλήματα;

Turkey is the New Iran. In the first part of my Greek-language interview with @DimokratiaGr, conducted by Giorgos Charvalias, I set out the strategic reality. Turkey is not a difficult ally. It is a coercive system. Iran built an axis outside the West. Turkey is building one from within - under NATO cover and through European access, Hamas conduits, drones, missiles, strategic depth and ideological warfare. The Turkish occupation of northern Cyprus is no longer a Cypriot or Greek file. It is already an Israeli security file. Ankara has turned the occupied north into strategic depth: intelligence cover, drone infrastructure, maritime leverage, grey finance, Hamas conduits and a forward position opposite Israel’s energy-security perimeter. Article 5 was not written to protect Hamas. If Turkish territory becomes a sanctuary for forces hostile to Israel, NATO will not convert terrorism into immunity. A Hamas command node on Turkish territory is not an alliance asset. It is a liability. Nor is this only about Erdogan. On Cyprus, the Aegean, Syria, the Kurds, Israel and Turkish primacy, Islamists and Kemalists often differ in language, not in perimeter. One says empire. The other says Europe. Both defend the same perimeter. The interview also covered the next stage of 3+1: mutual assistance without automatic war; Greece’s legitimate concern about being drawn into Israel’s conflicts; 1974 as a warning against confusing avoidance with deterrence; America as a partner, not a foundation; A Clean Break’s misreading of Turkey; Jolani’s Syria; Azerbaijan and Armenia; and why, for Greece, this is not an opening for war, but an opening for leadership. Declarations are over. Deterrence begins when we organise power. 🔗 dimokratia.gr/politiki/69632…

Statue of Heracles (Latin Hercules) in St. Peter's Square in Argos, the oldest continuously inhabited area in Europe (the last 5,000 years minimum). The statue is 3.20 meters tall, was placed in 2022 (which, judging by the Centaur of Volos, was a good year for Greek mythology) and is a faithful copy of the one created by the great ancient Greek sculptor Lysippus
