Happy to share that a personal essay that I wrote for AOI is now out in the @AgentsofIshq anthology published by Westland Publishers. Writing about reading Sidney Sheldon while reading for a PhD was pleasantly therapeutic :)

I have a strange fascination with watching characters who speak fast (to indicate intelligence) in shows like The Diplomat and The Newsroom. It is addictive and cringe and just the right distraction for the PhD.

Happy to declare that I have no accomplishments / achievements to share for sometime and currently my biggest flex is gymming and walking. The rejection folder is overflowing fyi.

@akhilakn90 It really makes your soul die a little because every single thing you put up is in the service of showing off what you have done for this imaginary audience and secure validation. (Of course there is joy but often that gets usurped)

@akhilakn90 Hey, thanks. I am trying to normalise saying I am happy to announce that I got all rejections because I am sick of the happy to announce achievements we have to do in academia.

1/ #CitiesInFiction now has a literary map. Every book in our list is pinned to the place it is set in. You can explore South Asian fiction as a geography — which cities have been written about, and which are still waiting. 👉 citiesinfiction.com/maps

How does one write about books without succumbing to mind numbing phrases like "tour de force" or "genre bending"? I'm doing a 2 hour online workshop on how to write a BOOK REVIEW that isn't just a summary Tomorrow 10 AM slot & 2 PM slot Price & other details in the next tweet

Finished this beautiful novel in no time. Can we ever get this level of precision in prose? Not wordy not dense but just enough to shadow Stoner's gravitas.

@the7424 @PhilipPanass I personally know some really good PhDs that have come out and I think that is dependent on a handful of good mentors. But these are exceptions in a sea of nothing too..

@the7424 @PhilipPanass I agree with this largely but I also feel that I know there are pockets of good research happening within these institutions. And everywhere humanities and the social sciences are also imploding. I think one could speak to both and it won't be any less true.

I don't support any new initiatives for the humanities department particularly in india. The kind of shit research done by our phd scholars is so disappointing that atleast some departments need to consider what they are doing. Particularly hindi and history.
Anwesh Satpathy@anwesh_satpathy

And it is not about funding. Humanities departments are v cheap to maintain and in terms of pure money you get more than you invest. There r no equipments. no necessity for research grants as expensive as science because the research isn’t costly. It is purely lack of initiative
