It's hard to beat the joy of learning.

A perk of attending the Samsung AI award event was meeting @Yoshua_Bengio and having a fun debate on the future of humanity with super-intelligent robots. The future looks bright -- there has never been a greater need for skilled labor that humanity shouldn’t carry alone.

I'm deeply honored to receive the @Samsung AI researcher of the year 2025 award for our group's work on building general robots. Also congratulations to my fellow awardees @yuqirose and @NicolasPapernot.

I quickly learnt that Mathematics was more than multiplication. And it is ok not to know things cold, so long I could reconstruct. Slow is fine. First principles are important. Over time this got me into the endless spiral of "Why?"

To be clear, academia is not inherently "better" or "worse" than industry. In fact, I believe there are amazing opportunities in industry! But, despite its many imperfections, it's hard to find a better option than academia for open-ended curiosity-driven research.

You don't _need_ a PhD (or any qualification) to do almost anything. A PhD is a rare opportunity to grow as an independent thinker in an academic environment, rather than immediately becoming a gear in a corporate agenda. It's definitely not for everyone!

This fall, I’ll be joining NYU as an assistant professor of computer science. The department is betting big on quantum computing, and I’m thrilled to be part of it. Come visit me in NYC!
