@Aprilcots255097 @LilithLovett "those incapable […] also die if blue loses" - was that added later or did you make that up? OG did not include it. I know OP later added that *everybody* is forced to press, even toddlers. Which IMO makes no sense since then all just wait until comatose patients wake up or die.

@apeiros @LilithLovett They aren't doing that though. People who are unable to press a button don't contribute to either number but since the scenario has only people who press the red button surviving those incapable of (or for some reason choose not to) vote also die if blue loses

“Blue vote for their own suicide” Except it’s only people who *pressed the red button* will live. There will inevitably be hundreds of millions who cannot press ANY buttons. The infants, the infirm, the unconscious. Pressing blue is the only option to not condemn them to death
Tim Urban@waitbutwhy

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

@ultimatecub0 @ChrisPacia Yes. With the assumption "everybody who's forced to choose and bear the consequences is capable of understanding the consequences" it's a clear red for me. But changing it to "x% are (essentially) forced to choose blue" I'm honestly not sure where my threshold for x would be.

@apeiros @ChrisPacia Our hope is on that one toddler forgetting to vote… It only takes a low x for me to risk my life in this scenario. Why? In a population of 8 billion, just 1% voting blue and everyone else voting red would be about 80 million dead. Infants & toddlers make up 6.5-7%.

Red people are just living their lives as normal. Blue people are *going out of their way* to put their own lives at risk in a way that causes other people to have to risk their lives to save them. You tell me which side is acting unethically.

@ultimatecub0 @ChrisPacia The whole world will stay forever still because that one toddler doesn't care about the buttons and never presses any 😂 (also coma patients, well, whatever) But yeah, this changes it to a threshold question: "x% are forced to press blue" - at what x do you risk your life?

@apeiros @ChrisPacia They will be participating, and here’s my reasoning: Toddlers may opt to simply choose the color that they like, on account of being unable to grasp the abstract consequences an adult can. Cases involving woodchippers trigger visceral feelings and allow toddlers to grasp it easy.

@Romy_Holland The hypothetical makes no such claim. How do unconscious people vote? But the assumption that people who need a guardian still push the button themselves (which I find unreasonable, but not wrong) is the only one I've seen so far making blue sensible.

this is why blue is the correct answer btw

@_Void_Apostle_ @Aella_Girl the hypothetical involves babies smashing buttons. it involves old ladies with dementia. it involves the 250 million illiterate adults in india.

@NainsiDwiv50980 Proof-of-work is essentially "pay (with compute) to visit". I'm not opposed to that (besides that it means my battery is drained). But why would we waste those [CG]PU cycles? Why not do something meaningful with it like protein folding? Or bitcoin mining?

CAPTCHA IS OFFICIALLY OUTDATED A new open-source library called Cap is changing how websites stop bots. No puzzles. No traffic lights. No “select all bikes” anymore. Instead, it uses a SHA-256 proof-of-work system — simple, silent, and fast. Why devs are switching: • Only ~20KB in size • Zero tracking, zero data collection • No images, no user friction • Works with any JS runtime • Fully customizable (visible, invisible, floating modes) • Zero dependencies • Can be deployed instantly via Docker This is a full replacement for traditional CAPTCHA systems. Cleaner UX. Faster websites. Better privacy. 100% open-source on GitHub Link in comments.

@kellabyte I like this idea. AI could just be the "fire" starter. AI group members which lead by example, acting wholesome. Replace AI member by member with actual people who follow the example. Isolate toxic people into AI-only groups. If they remain toxic, group with like-minded people.

#3 Use AI to dramatically improve the online gaming experience you pioneered with Xbox 1 and Xbox 360. It used to be great meeting new online friends in games or joking around with randos. Now fun randos are quiet and toxicity has taken over.

@kellabyte Recently, twitter seems to be lying more and more. I clicked on the post below to see the thread and all of Kelly's points. Yet twitter pretends this is the chain of parent posts. (X) Doubt.

@RoyCalbeck x.com/apeiros/status… so… as a self-proclaimed blue button pusher: did you mask during covid? did you vaccinate? I do think some blue button pushers did (and do). But I believe many didn't and if so, the cognitive dissonance would be staggering (but sadly entirely expected).

Regarding the red-blue button question (if you press red, you survive regardless; if you press blue, you die unless at least 50% press blue). Text in Alt + Reply.

Guys blue is obviously more moral. Sure, red is logical. But blue is more moral. Anyone who thinks in 2nd order effects should advocate for blue. Just like the people who created our high trust societies would. Red voters destroy our society.

Final thought: the argument seems to be that "in the real world" (aka you lost the poll) people are selfish, and therefore you must press red. But... you also pressed red. Every red vote claims they are a victim of other red votes' selfishness. But nobody confronts this idea lol

Re: red/blue button thought experiment. Pressing the opposite color from your society’s norm is always wrong. Because it doesn’t matter what the norm is! They’re both fine! What’s bad is decking to drive on the left when your society drives on the right.

And that's something which doeshappen in real life. "Would I wear a mask to protect others? Would I vaccinate at 0.001% personal risk to reduce a 20% risk to others?" I'm actually curious as to how many self-declared blue button pushers did wear a mask, did and do vaccinate, 3/4
