Here is an analysis of Germany’s decision not to support Israel In the ICJ case: “First, it may have finally dawned on the Federal Government that an interpretation of the Genocide Convention helpful to Israel would have been difficult to reconcile with the expansive interpretation of the Genocide Convention which it had submitted on 15 November 2023 together with five other Western States in The Gambia v. Myanmar case. … Second, the shift in Germany’s position may have been an expression of a distancing from Israel with regard to the war in Gaza.” Source: x.com/stefantalmon/s…

Germany has stepped back from its earlier pledge to support Israel at the International Court of Justice in the Gaza genocide case, in a significant shift from its position when South Africa first brought proceedings in 2023. middleeastmonitor.com/20260319-germa…

@TheEconomist has utterly destroyed its reputation with its deeply racist and profoundly bigoted coverage of the mass-murder of the people of Gaza. For six months we have seen issue after issue of scandalously one sided-coverage which has has made it complicit in the continued enslavement of the Palestinian people, the on-going seizure of their land, the systematic abuse of their human rights and the industrial slaughter of their innocent civilians in both Gaza and the West Bank. Shame on its senior editorial staff responsible for the travesty of inhumanity and bias. @zannymb
Mairav Zonszein מרב זונשיין@MairavZ

Am I the only one who found the Economist cover a bit melodramatic and jumping the gun? Israel still has full US backing and other countries and is not under nearly enough pressure to stop the war. You know who is alone? Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem

One of the lessons of the Iran war is that it was a huge mistake not to even try to put any of the Iraq war architects in prison. We shouldn’t make it again.

The countries of the Middle East didn't start this war and lobbied against it
Ruben Gallego@RubenGallego

@mzdereus The countries of the Middle East need to pick up the tab. I am not voting for more tax dollars.

BREAKING: the most influential Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Sistani (who resides in Iraq) has issued a Fatwa on the Iran war, decreeing "collective religious obligation" for communal defense. The last time he issued such a fatwa was in June 2014 after ISIS capture Mosul.

BREAKING: This is quite something Qatar's energy minister has told the FT that war in the Middle East 'could bring down the economies of the world'. He says it will hit growth, push up energy bills and lead to shortages of products Saad al-Kaabi said that even if the war ended immediately it would take Qatar 'weeks to months' to return to normal deliveries after the Ras Laffan plant was bombed by Iran While only a small proportion of Qatar's gas goes to Europe, the halt in production means there will be a global bidding war for what remains on the market “This will bring down the economies of the world,” he said. “If this war continues for a few weeks, GDP growth around the world will be impacted. Everybody’s energy price is going to go higher. There will be shortages of some products and there will be a chain reaction of factories that cannot supply.” This is Qatar telling the US in the strongest possible terms to bring the conflict to an end or everyone will face the consequences...

My sources in the Gulf say this is NOT true at this stage, even as all options remain on the table if these attacks continue. Gulf states remain focused on de-escalation, not escalation at this point. They know if they take part in this war, which they lobbied against and tried to prevent, it will make everything worse.
Doha News@dohanews

Following a classified congressional briefing on Tuesday regarding #US strikes, U.S. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said Iran’s decision to target Gulf Arab countries was a mistake that would push those states closer to the U.S. He added that “Arab partners” would take a larger role in attacks on #Tehran alongside American forces.

It's true that Iran is exporting drones to Russia being used in Ukraine and that it's trying to sow chaos. However, Kallas would be a lot more credible if Europe wasn't exporting weapons to Israel for its wars, and that Israel and the US are also sowing chaos.
Kaja Kallas@kajakallas

Tehran is now trying to export the war to as many countries as it can. Today, EU Foreign Ministers and our Gulf partners will discuss what we can do together to break the cycle of violence. The same drones that are attacking Kyiv, are now attacking our partners in the Middle East. So we will explore how we can support drone interceptor production. My doorstep ↓

“Iran chooses chaos.” That’s the headline of today's newsletter from The New York Times. This is not the headline of a serious, fact-based newspaper. It’s the headline of a newspaper that promotes US war propaganda. I’m one of those who still subscribes, although I'm increasingly asking myself why. I’m reaching the end of my tether with the New York Times.

Dubai isn't just a city of tourists and feckless influencers and tax dodgers. Its a city of mostly hardworking expatriates, many of whom come from hard places where they've seen hard things, and many are just going about their business. No need to write epitaphs for the UAE.

Spain stands up to Trump because of principle. On Greenland, on Gaza, and on Iran. Most of Europe short-sightedly only stood up to Trump for immediate self-interest, while sacrificing principle.
Acyn@Acyn

Trump: Spain has been terrible. In fact, I told Scott to cut off all dealings with Spain. Spain actually said that we can't use their bases. And that's all right. We could use their base if we want. We could just fly in and use it. Nobody's going to tell us not to use it.

Wtf?
William Dalrymple@DalrympleWill

The @BBCNews has become an accomplice not only to genocide in Gaza but now also the project for Greater Israel. This report @YolandeKnell is a disgrace, and sanitises the invasion of a sovereign country & the trashing of international law. Orwell will be spinning in his grave
