@BarbarianDisco @Lordmatteus2312 @glewis2317 @ChubbyFunsterGC I'm so glad you love the Sporecaster. They are one of my favorite classes, especially when you delve into the Wet Way.

@Lordmatteus2312 @glewis2317 @archon @ChubbyFunsterGC He's such an awesome class. one of my players is going to be one when I get off my ass and run Dwarrowdeep.

I already have it and highly recommend it. Far and away my favorite version of D&D. Imagine taking the B/X chassis and using it to do AD&D better than Gary.
Its systems work well together and are much more internally consistent that other versions.

@glewis2317 @archon @ChubbyFunsterGC While you're at it, you should pick up By This Axe. I'm playing what is becoming my favorite character class ever: The Sporecaster! It's weird, it's random, and it makes you think outside the box. I love it!

@archon Steve Jackson, Sandy Peterson, Monte Cook, Jordan Weisman, and Greg Costikyan.

@AutumnCrystal3 I was not familiar with Phil or Kurt - that's deep lore, awesome.
English

Sandy Peterson, Ken St.Andre, Phil Edgren, Kurt Mohlencamp(sp?), is Rob Kuntz available? If not, Steve Marsh.
The first and last two are probably on everyone’s list. Kurt co-wrote Darkus Thel, a beautiful game. Edgrens’ Knights of the Round Table may be obscure but a LOT of 2nd wave designers were familiar with it, I’ll warrant. I read it and see its DNA in BRP, Pendragon, Lace & Steel…and speaking of, maybe I’ll take Pauli Kidd for my 5th. If $% Swords & Sails ever gets released, I’ll know if I chose well.
This group can make a game with sound mechanics, an intriguing setting and compelling adventures with their eyes closed, and make it FUN…to learn, to run and to play…the most difficult aspect of a game to achieve imo.
You can immerse yourself in their works. Not something I can say, speaking only for myself, of course, of Jackson, who’ll probably be on many a list…(and I look forward to this thread!)…his games seem to have an extra degree of separation between Player and Character. You’re playing instead of being. Maybe that’s just me.

@archon @MateriaMundi @SandyofCthulhu Jackson is obviously super talented but he also seems like an insufferable woke asshole. Kevin Siembieda needs to be on this list.
English

@aesculetum Designing an RPG for you, I suppose! Mostly just wanted to see who was on people's lists, after you remove the deceased founding fathers
English

@Kartaugh Bill S is a top notch addition. I thought Greg Stafford had passed though, so he might be excluded.
English

@archon David "Zeb" Cook
Sandy Petersen
Greg Stafford
Marc Miller
Greg Costikyan
The first guy on the bench would be Bill Slavicsek (how on earth was he the lead editor/developer on the Star Wars D6 game at WEG, SUPERVISING Costikyan, at the age of SIXTEEN?), wunderkind indeed.
English

@skepticalone44 Mark Rein-Hagen and Rob Kuntz are both fantastic additions to the list
English

@archon All time would be:
1. Bob Bledsaw
2. MAR Barker
3. Frank Mentzer
4. E Gary Gygax
5. Mark Rein-Hagen
Still living is a lot harder
Marc Miller
Sandy Peterson
Steve Jackson
Rob Kuntz
Mark Rein-Hagen (Ars Magica 1987 makes it)
English

@MateriaMundi @SandyofCthulhu Meanwhile I might trade Steve Jackson for Greg Costikyan while I'm thinking about it.
English

@archon @SandyofCthulhu Gonna have to trade Michael Pondsmith for Jordan Weissman (Battletech) and Greg Gorden for Tom Dowd (Shadowrun), I think.

Tomorrow night, @glewis2317 and I host the first in a quarterly series dedicated to worldbuilding for RPGs. @pulphummock joins us to discuss his approach, his inspirations, and the pitfalls to avoid. We hope to see you there to join the conversation!
