My heart melts every time i see someone with down syndrome. They look so gentle and kind. Pure happiness everytime they smile. This beautiful photo essay is titled “Here I am” by Hilary Gauld in celebration of #worlddownsyndromeday this past 21 March. The portrait series aims to challenge the misconception that adults with Down syndrome do not live into old age.
"Here I Am" features adults and seniors alongside their childish selves, celebrating the progress of the Down syndrome community and highlighting the healthcare system's growing dependence on unpaid caregivers. As they age, they are at greater risk for certain health conditions that require additional care, such as Alzheimer's disease. It is crucial to ensure that individuals with Down syndrome and their carers have access to comprehensive and unbiased information and government support.
