Recently learned this framework & love it.
We all think in 5 timeframes:
• Distant Past (things that happened months / years ago)
• Near Past (last few days)
• Present
• Near Future (today, tmrw)
• Distant Future (what we want our lives to be months / years from now)
The % of time we spend in each category is reflective of our quality of life.
• Too much time obsessing over near past & near future = anxiety.
• Never thinking about the distant future = feeling lost or unfulfilled.
• Replaying the distant past over and over again = sad, nostalgic, or remorseful.
• Even staying entirely in the present can leave us feeling empty — like we’re just reacting to our circumstances.
For most of us (myself included), we have a set default of where the voice in our head generally lives — usually programmed by childhood & how our parents operated.
And for most of us — we can improve our lives & happiness if we intentionally do a little more or a little less here and there.
To live life fully, we need to spend time in all of these states — but the relative percentages matter. Assessing how we’re splitting our time can be massively helpful.
