15 months ago i had 587 followers today i’m close to 10,000 here are a few things i learned along the way 1/ under 1,000 followers, almost nobody is seeing your posts be a reply guy leave thoughtful replies every day. that’s how people discover you 2/ find your first 100 fans and treat them like gold reply to comments. answer dms. support what they’re building too don’t take those early supporters for granted 3/ don’t do it alone a bunch of us at @mission__ctrl decided we were going to get good at twitter together we made a pact to post something. anything. every day we’d roast each other’s tweets, share ideas, and keep each other going when every post got 3 likes looking back, almost everyone from that original group has 10x’d their following over the last year 4/ don’t overthink your posts experiment. shitpost. try memes. write serious posts most of it won’t work. that’s fine you’re building reps, not trying to go viral 5/ every post (or reply) should do something for someone else teach them something. make them laugh. give them words for something they’ve been thinking. or make them look smart when they repost it the best product posts don’t feel like ads they make other ppl say “wait… we’re seeing this too” they make people with the problem feel seen 6/ don’t optimize for haters but don’t optimize to avoid them either if you’re saying something original, some people will disagree. that’s normal trying to make everyone happy is a great way to become forgetable 7/ people repost things that say something about them they want to look smart. funny. early. or in the know write posts people want attached to their own name 8/ i think building distribution is a core skill no matter what you do we’ve made friends, hired people, met investors, and gotten customers through twitter posting into the void felt kinda stupid in the begining i’m really glad i kept going
