Khanna has the nerve to complain about gaslighting as he leaves out the part of the story (referenced in the article below) that his failure to coordinate his visit with the IDF is the main reason this incident occurred. One has to be awfully naive not to recognize that Khanna wanted to create an incident and went out of his way to do just that
Ro Khanna@RoKhanna

You are lying @havivrettiggur. The Jerusalem Post, which leans right, concluded that it was not a closed zone & vigilante settlers had no right to detain Americans. Stop gaslighting Americans. jpost.com/israel-news/ar…

Cameron Kasky had two choices: 1. Cite the paragraph in the Jerusalem Post article that supposedly “thoroughly debunked” the criticism. 2. Repeat the word “debunked” as though repetition magically turns assertion into evidence. He chose #2. The article criticizes the settlers. It criticizes the IDF. It also criticizes Ro Khanna for failing to coordinate the visit. What it does not do is corroborate every dramatic claim now being made about “detention at gunpoint” or deliberate IDF persecution. “Debunked” is not a citation. It is what people say when they cannot produce one.

Nope. MULTIPLE studies have been done that show that trans women are not a threat in women's spaces. In fact, they are 4 times more likely to be the VICTIM of a sexual assault. But go on, tell more lies.

there is no way to reform this. it’s pure lawlessness. we must restore law, order and accountability. we must abolish ice. we must punish ice. politicians who have funded and thanked ice should take a cold hard look at what they’ve allowed to take place on our streets.

You describe the incident as "a bit delayed in driving forward." In America and most democracies, being blockaded by armed settlers and the IDF for 75 minutes (which no one disputes) would constitute detention/false imprisonment and the perpetrators arrested. Israel's response not understanding what rights are is almost more disturbing than the horrific incident itself witnessed by the NYT photographer, other Americans, and Israelis and confirmed by the Jerusalem Post, NYT, and Reuters.
Haviv Rettig Gur@havivrettiggur

Alas, Mr. Congressman, I'm not lying. And I started this line of questioning assuming you were telling the truth. I've written long essays on extremist Israeli violence in the West Bank. I know it happens. I was ready, at first glance, to believe it happened here. But it didn't. This wasn't Israeli violence. This was agitprop for your American audiences. I said explicitly that I'm not familiar with the details of that area. It took a lot of effort for JPost to find out what it found out -- which was that it was a closed military zone only recently opened. But if you'd coordinated your visit with Israeli authorities, this would have been sorted out from the start. Those soldiers weren't angry or aggressive, they seemed mostly just confused about the status of the area and how to handle your visit. Because, you know, there was no coordination. JPost suggests all that in the article you yourself shared. And what of the violence? Your group had cameras -- a professional photographer and at least one bodycam -- yet you've produced no evidence that I've seen of the violence you claim to have experienced. Remember that you claimed the violence was sufficient to demand that Netanyahu order the prosecution of those soldiers. I've seen that sort of violence before; if you produce that footage, I'll join your demand for prosecution. That's not rhetoric. I really will, wholeheartedly. But if you don't, I think it's safe to assume you blew up a small inconvenience caused by your own refusal to talk to Israelis. In a similar vein, you used the word "detained" as if you were unlawfully held against your will -- and hide behind its second meaning, that you were a bit delayed in driving forward into the area. The first is on the spectrum of kidnapping crimes, the second is the sort of problem you'd encounter at the entrance to a federal building as you search your pockets for an ID. Which was it? Anyway, you were angling for some domestic political brownie points, and congratulations, you got 'em.

Ambassador, we have always had a relationship of mutual respect despite political differences. The IDF has now clarified it was not a restricted zone and Israeli papers have confirmed this. Deputy Chief of Mission David Brownstein in our embassy did a superb job in getting us out. We are safe because of him. Please thank him. We obviously notified our Embassy and Israel's embassy about the trip given we were in constant touch with David. I hope sir you will work on bringing the extreme settlers who blockaded Americans to justice. Also, please visit Beit Sahour, a Christian majority town. They want to stage the Passion of Christ play but illegal settlers are blocking them from doing so even as they have American investors ready for the project. timesofisrael.com/us-lawmaker-de… jpost.com/israel-news/ar…
Ambassador Mike Huckabee@GovMikeHuckabee

The left-wing activist who set up this stunt says "The embassy is involved." That is NOT TRUE. We did NOT know a member of Congress was coming. We would have said don't go to restricted zone. As FACTS come out, it's not helping the desired narrative. Not "held at gunpoint."

ANALYSIS: Israel’s legal system grants Jews rights & privileges Palestinians cannot obtain Israel’s system relies on laws that explicitly deny rights to “non-Jews.” Any Jew anywhere in the world can generally immigrate and obtain Israeli citizenship under the Law of Return. Palestinians expelled or displaced in 1948, and most of their descendants, have no comparable right to return. The 2018 Nation-State Basic Law declares that the right of national self-determination in Israel is “unique to the Jewish people,” giving constitutional recognition to Jewish national rights without an equivalent guarantee for Palestinians. Palestinian citizens who marry spouses from the West Bank or Gaza face severe restrictions on family reunification and citizenship that Jewish Israelis generally do not encounter. Arab towns have historically received less land for expansion, fewer approved building permits and lower public investment, contributing to chronic housing shortages and infrastructure gaps. Admissions committees in many small communities can reject applicants they deem socially unsuitable, a system civil-rights groups argue has been used to keep Palestinian citizens out of predominantly Jewish communities. In East Jerusalem, Palestinians usually hold revocable permanent residency rather than citizenship and can lose the right to live in their own city under rules that do not apply to Jewish Israelis. In the occupied West Bank, Israeli settlers and Palestinians living in the same territory are governed by separate legal systems. Settlers generally receive Israeli civilian courts and protections, while Palestinians are subject largely to military law. Palestinians face checkpoints, permit regimes, movement restrictions, home demolitions, land expropriations and sharply limited building approvals while nearby settlements continue to expand. Major human-rights organizations—including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International—conclude these policies amount to apartheid. The legal distinctions are extensively documented: Jews and Palestinians living under Israeli authority possess fundamentally different rights, legal protections and access to land, movement and political status.

I am very critical of settler violence and think Israel needs to do far more to punish it. But that’s not what this is about. So what appears to have happened here was an intentional political stunt by someone who has built his entire career on stunts. @RoKhanna had his Palestinian guides take him into a restricted area that is closed off to civilians without requesting access or coordinating with anyone. Local security (which Khanna intentionally misrepresents as random settlers) then stopped them. IDF arrived and spent time evaluating the situation. Then Israeli police showed up, determined what had happened, and let them go on their way. No one was hurt or attacked. No one was threatened. Khanna knew going to a restricted area would get a response and he got exactly what he wanted. I will note that if a random group goes onto a military restricted area in the U.S., they would also be detained and questioned. Israel is to blame for letting Khanna plan out this stunt, but that’s exactly what it was. And it was predictably coordinated with the press as he had a NYT photographer with him and waited until they released a story days later to even post about it. Khanna wants to run for president on this nonsense because he has nothing to offer Americans.
Ro Khanna@RoKhanna

Israeli settlers, brandishing American made M4s, detained me & other Americans on my trip to Palestine. When the IDF arrived, they sided with the settlers & continued our detention. They made a huge mistake. You will be hearing more soon. nytimes.com/2026/07/11/us/…
