Built another weekend project! Please be nice - it's running on a GPU-less server in my mom's basement

.@_harshalsheth and I were building semantic search and wanted to test different embeddings strategies + models, but there aren't any good playgrounds for quickly iterating and building intuition so we built it! embed.sheth.io

I’m very excited to share that @AcrylData has raised our Series A funding round, a $21 million investment led by @8vc , with participation from new and existing investors like Data Community Fund, @AbstractVC, Webb Investment Network and @mantisVC who share our vision.

@AcrylData @8vc @AbstractVC @mantisVC Also announced today: Acryl Observe - our data observability product - represents our belief that data governance and monitoring belong together, and is an important step in bringing technical and non-technical teams together. Thanks for this hot take dude who doesn't know the 60 year history of databases. H/T @prempv Mike and I have a WIP paper that analyzes all the (failed) attempts to replace SQL + relational model. This tweet has motivated me to finish it and submit it.

SQL is going to die at the hands of an AI. I’m serious. @mayowaoshin is already doing this. Takes your company’s data and ingests it into ChatGPT. Then, you can create a chatbot for the data and just ask it questions using natural language. This video demoes the output. 🤯

@anshublog @jaminball People do care about the code! The tastemakers in the community generate the most innovative product improvements and Apache Kafka has continued to improve over the years due to this. @datahubproject gets contributions from companies like Stripe and Acryl customers benefit!

@jaminball People don’t realize 90% of the value comes from the aaS, and 10% from software. The “software industry” is really a “software-enabled service industry”. This is why Snowflake and Databricks are both winners. Nobody cares about the source code.

Lots of interesting discussion on the Confluent earnings call today about the TCO benefits of Cloud vs self managed Kafka. Will post more thoughts tomorrow! One of my favorite quotes from the call: "Traditional on-premise open source business models offer a premium product, better features for more money. As a result, they typically are able to capture only a fraction of the open source users as paying customers.. The cloud product, however, isn't just replacing the free software. It's also replacing the expensive infrastructure and people costs. This is driving a general mindset shift among software engineers and IT departments, who are increasingly looking for managed services first, trying to avoid ongoing operations wherever possible."
