Therefore it is an insult to him to substitute artificial metal forks for them when eating.” Tragically, the princess died of the plague about two years later. Rather than mourn her, the Venetian clergy saw her death as proof of God’s punishment for her “unnatural” eating habits. A more recent example comes from as late as 1897 when the British Royal Navy explicitly forbade sailors from using forks to eat their meals. It was considered a soft, aristocratic habit that would “weaken” the men. Sailors were expected to use only their hands and a basic knife. There’s countless such stories from Europe’s past but you get the point… That for the longest time in Europe, forks were as outrageous as Christmas.
