An open letter to @base builder #001 from a fellow base builder @jessepollak first of all, thank you for starting Base and taking it this far. For me, it’s the best onchain eco to build and trade on. I personally appreciate the support you give to builders like me. That said, I feel things are starting to head in the wrong direction. Not overall. In fact, Base looks stronger than ever and I’m more excited than ever to build on base. But one particular part of the ecosystem is getting out of control. Yes, I’m talking about the content coins. I know you have a real passion for creators and attention assets. I’ve watched the video you shared on X to better understand your vision. I see the potential, and I respect what you’re trying to achieve. I hope it works out long-term. But everything in life comes with trade-offs. When you focus too much on one thing, you inevitably lose ground elsewhere. Also, some ideas sound great in theory but don’t work in practice. or they’re simply ahead of their time. I’m not questioning whether content coins should exist or be explored further. The issue is that the Base ecosystem is starting to suffer from the content coins you in particular are creating. The feedback on X makes that clear. And it’s not because content coins are inherently bad, but because you are the main character of Base. „With great power comes great responsibility.“ Every tweet and action of yours is watched and judged. It reflects poorly on the ecosystem when you as the founder are seen launching a lot of coins that go to zero and/or diluting the ecosystem. “Tokenize everything. Coin it.“ that’s a great vision and I fully support it. But let others drive the narrative on content coins for now. Imagine other builders would launch more and more coins regularly. The outrage would be devastating and the community would leave and go somewhere else. I’m concerned this is going to happen with base too if this continues. As the ecosystem’s founder, I believe - and I think many others agree - that you should take a more neutral stance. When the idea of content coins matures and adoption spreads, and literally everyone is coining everything, that’s the time to fully embrace it. But pioneering it, should not be done by an ecosystem founder this big as you, in my honest opinion. I know your goal is to make Base more open and creator-driven, and I deeply respect that. But I think the current market environment calls for restraint, so that Base’s long-term vision doesn’t get overshadowed. Right now, the community feedback shows it doesn’t fit the current crypto sentiment. It’s pushing people away from Base, and that hurts the ecosystem. we all care deeply about this ecosystem and want to see it thrive. In my opinion, if you shifted focus and support toward projects instead of content coins, the impact on Base would be a 1000 times greater. I hope you take this as constructive feedback. It honestly pains me to see so many negative takes about Base on the timeline. Base has so much more to offer than content coins. I’m writing this because I want to help make Base the best onchain ecosystem out there for everyone. That’s why I thought an open letter - respectful and genuine - is the right way to start this discussion. Respectfully, Lennart, Base builder #069
