Universal HIGH INCOME via checks issued by the Federal government is the best way to deal with unemployment caused by AI. AI/robotics will produce goods & services far in excess of the increase in the money supply, so there will not be inflation.

andy weir claims social commentary in fiction is bad, but really he's just not smart enough or a good enough writer to do it! ursula le guin wrote incredibly beautiful and incredibly political science fiction books that were much better for their politics, whether or not you actually agreed with her. most truly great art *has* a message, even if you dont necessarily need to listen to it to appreciate it.
now it's certainly true there's swaths of mediocre bullshit that's far worse for trying to push some transparent agenda into a sitcom or YA fantasy novel . and in some sense andy weir is wise to recognize his limitations and not attempt this, wiser than say brandon sanderson . but these absolutist statements are ridiculous and just reveal his lack of taste.

The Harry Potter books are KIND OF children’s books, but the truth is that it is the perfect series because it matures as you do, particularly with how it treats death.
There is no death in books 1-3, except as a background discussion, but each book bring us closer and closer to it, to the point that book 3 is filled with death omens.
Book 4 opens and closes with a death, but it’s the death of someone we don’t know very well.
Book 5 shows us to the death of a loved one, book 6 involves the death of someone we believed invincible, and book 7 brings us the death of the protagonist himself. No series has ever nailed it like that.

I struck up a conversation with an elderly woman on an airplane in 2000. She asked if I’d read Harry Potter yet and I replied that I didn’t read children’s books. She lectured me about how it’s for adults too.

america is one of very few countries that has even tried to build a multiethnic democracy at scale, & the fact that it has a visible, loud, ongoing discourse about racism is actually evidence of relatively low tolerance for it compared to countries where racial hierarchy is just... ambient & unremarked upon. japan (lol very obvious now), korea, much of europe, india's caste system, han chauvinism in china, ethnic dynamics across the gulf states.. most of these societies don't even have the vocabulary for the conversation america tortures itself over daily. america is quite literally is one of the least if not the least racist countries on the planet, & it's not even close.

SpaceX going public in June would be the single largest venture outcome in startup history. It may create 10k+ liquid millionaires. These people are scientists, engineers and motivated by big ideas. This is an incredible outcome for society that will have positive ripple effects into the future.
