A barn’s roar flickered in his memory, embers swallowing a child’s cry, a wife’s mocking laugh ringing as chains tightened around his wrists. Forty-six winters had carved their weight into his palms, leaving a stoic emptiness where hope and despair once warred. The small wooden bear charm that pressed against his chest was a relic of an old, now lost time. Once, his daughter held it lovingly in her small hands, its worn edges a testament to her care for the charm. He took another long draught from the dented tankard, willing the ale to drown the embers of a life he couldn’t reclaim.
