@Utahfarmersorg1 These things are bad news!

COVID did not just divide societies. It divided tables. The specific table where you grew up, where you understood the unspoken rule that certain subjects stay outside the door. That rule existed for a reason. The family holds together not because everyone agrees but because the relationship is considered more important than the argument. What the pandemic did was make that trade feel dishonest. Because the thing you were being asked not to argue about was not politics in the abstract. It was whether what was being done to people was real. Whether the injured existed. Whether the fear had been manufactured and the compliance demanded in its name had cost something that no one in an official position intended to count. You cannot unknow what you know. And you cannot sit comfortably at a table where the knowing is treated as the problem. The people who remained comfortable did so, in many cases, by choosing not to look. Not from malice. From the same self-protective instinct that has always made certain truths socially expensive. The materialist rhythm of daily life, the holidays, the comfortable distance from consequence, provides a very effective reason not to examine anything that might disturb it. I learned who was with me when the cost of being with me became real. That knowledge is clarifying, even when it is painful. You stop maintaining connections that were held together primarily by the mutual agreement not to say what you actually think. What remains is smaller. It is also more honest. The communities forming around these questions are not a replacement for what was lost. But they are not nothing. They are people for whom the truth cost something, finding each other. That is how genuine solidarity has always started.
