When Britain was desperate for our support to retake the Falklands with missiles, intelligence, and logistics, at the same time we were trying to improve relations with our South American neighbors, we helped our ally. In Kosovo Europe begged us to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in their own backyard that they couldn’t prevent themselves. The US carried the operation. Then there's the Libya disaster. #Benghazi. France and the UK "directed" an operation that required us to supply the military support they couldn't, The more recent French interventions in Mali and Chad depended on U.S. lift and intelligence support. When they call, we answer. When we act, we get lectures. But for how much longer?

Actions and comments by President Trump and key Administration officials are understandably generating great concern about the future of NATO. I think its an open question about whether it will survive the remaining years of the Trump Administration. There is also the question of how a prospective JD Vance Administration would manage the issue of Trans-Atlantic defence cooperation from 2028 onwards. If NATO falls that's a huge victory for Putin - and for Xi. It makes war in Europe - beyond Ukraine - much more likely, especially if the US turns its back on its former European allies. If, however, 2028 saw a Democrat win for the White House, and the 2026 mid-terms saw Congress led by Democrats, might a fallen NATO be revived? That's an interesting question - would it be changed or ideally improved as 'NATO 2.0' - and if so, how? Certainly, Europe will need to step up and spend more on its own Defence - Trump is correct to make that case - so I'd see a NATO 2.0 with the US playing a smaller and more distant role. But a NATO 2.0 re-emerging after 2028 would likely face an immediate Russian threat to its eastern frontier - it would have little time for pondering significant change.

I think Europe should pre-empt Trump and threaten to kick the U.S. out of NATO. The Ukrainians, Finns, Turks and Poles - and the camp followers (Brits, French, Germans etc al) should be enough to stop the Russians.
