In 70 CE, on Tisha B‘Av, (today), Roman soldiers carried the golden Menorah and other treasures out of the burning Temple in Jerusalem and paraded them through the streets of Rome. And here’s my hot take that will make everyone mad: Netanyahu is a war criminal and he should be prosecuted and spend the rest of his life in prison. New York is also the seat of the United Nations and just as we shouldn’t have arrested Arafat we should maintain the norm of allowing world leaders to come to the UN. It should not be hard to agree that the killing of children and the blocking of humanitarian aid, is a war crime. It does not matter who did what first. Just like I think Hamas leadership needs to stand trials for their crimes, so too does Netanyahu. Israel absolutely had a right to defend itself after the attacks. That does not however provide an endless blank check for the indiscriminate targeting of civilians, the blocking of aid, nor to shield your soldiers who have specifically targeted children. The exact heinous type of actions you claim to be fighting against. There is no eye for an eye here. This is not about being anti-Palestinian, or anti-Jewish, or anti-Israel. This is about what is right. All must be accountable before Justice. And the US should have no party to those who commit these crimes, let alone fund them. And I’m glad to see America still has some leaders that can stand by that, and do so with dignity.
