YOUTH SHOULD USE DIGITAL PLATFORMS TO RAISE AWARENESS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION. Last evening, D/SSP Fred Lumala, Head of Investigations, @AntiGraft_SH delivered a presentation on behalf of Brig Gen Henry Isoke, the Head of SH-ACU during a campfire organized by students of the Integrity Ambassadors Club, at Bishop Stuart University in Mbarara, under the theme "Promoting Effective Participation of the Youth in the War Against Corruption." In his remarks, D/SSP Lumala emphasized that corruption does not only occur in high offices but often starts with seemingly small actions that society may gradually normalize. This includes behaviors such as; paying for services, falsifying documents, abusing connections, cheating in examinations and remaining silent when wrongdoing occurs. He added that, corruption is not a distant issue involving only powerful officials but persists because ordinary people become comfortable with dishonesty in their daily lives. He noted that Article 17(1)(i) of the Constitution places a duty on every citizen to combat corruption and to prevent the misuse or waste of public property. Therefore, young people must actively serve as agents of accountability within their schools, communities and workplaces. D/SSP Lumala pointed out that young people are victims of corruption, because it directly impacts them through; unemployment, poor public services, weak institutions and limited opportunities. This is why young people cannot afford to be passive observers but must be active in the fight against corruption. He also highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to strengthen anti-corruption measures through institutional reforms, law enforcement, and citizen engagement calling upon the students to make use these. He further added that, technology and social media provide powerful opportunities for youth involvement in accountability efforts, emphasizing that the youth must utilize digital platforms to raise awareness, responsibly expose wrongdoing, promote civic education, and advocate for transparency. Globally, technology enables citizens to monitor government initiatives, track public expenditure, and report corruption, but it is essential to use social media responsibly. In conclusion, he expressed his gratitude to the university's management, including Mr. Nabasa Medard, the University Secretary, and Rev. Aijuka Aggrey, Patron of the Integrity Ambassadors Club for organizing such a productive event. He encouraged the student leadership and all students to continue being ambassadors of integrity wherever they go. Also in attendence was, Mutesi Mary, a Strategic Communications and Development Officer at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs who urged the government to involve the youth in this cause by creating opportunities such as information and advocacy campaigns, establishing youth-led anti-corruption desks at the district level, amending youth and local government laws to incorporate youth monitoring into oversight bodies, and ensuring proper coordination among anti-corruption institutions.
