The Sufi missionaries who Islamised Anatolia, Africa, India, and Southeast Asia understood something important that Salafis in the West never did: people do not, in the first instance, come to a religion because it is logically defensible or ritually correct. They come because it is alive, because it offers them something they cannot find elsewhere. The great da'is of history were artists, poets, musicians, healers, and above all human beings of conspicuous moral and spiritual depth. The tradition they transmitted possesses that depth in abundance. The question is whether the gatekeepers of its public face in the West will allow it to breathe.
