@azym121 @DAN_Europe Thanks for clarifying. Do you happen to know the names of the deceased divers? I actually thought one of the recover divers name was one of the deceased.

What unfolded this week was more than just a difficult dive operation. At the same time, we witnessed something incredible from the global diving community:professionalism under pressure, unwavering teamwork, and divers coming together from around the world to support one another

A photo shared by a family member of Sergeant Mahdhee. Beyond any doubt, Mahdhee was everything described in this photo and more. He was a courageous hero who descended into that cave fully aware of the risks involved, in an attempt to retrieve the bodies of four Italian divers so their families could grieve and lay their loved ones to rest. We must never forget Mahdhee or the sacrifice he made in service. If it were up to me, I would even rename the cave in his honor. But honoring him with words alone will not do justice to his sacrifice! The most important thing now is to carefully investigate what led to this tragic incident, learn every possible lesson from it, and ensure that such a tragedy never happens again. We cannot afford to lose another life the same way. If we fail to learn from this incident, improve the safety of future divers, and fix the systemic failures that contributed to this tragedy, then his sacrifice would have been in vain.

Based on the information I have gathered so far from published reports and comments by experts, this is what is currently known: Depending on the source, the cave is described as having either four chambers or two main chambers, with some not counting the two smaller openings as separate chambers. The depth and dimensions also vary across different sections of the cave. 1. 🇮🇹 Gianluca Benedetti, the dive instructor, was reportedly recovered from Chamber B. 2. 🇲🇻 Sergeant Mahudhee’s body was reportedly recovered beyond Chamber B, either near the entrance to Chamber C or inside Chamber C ??? Rest of the 4 individuals were reportedly recovered inside Chamber D: 3. 🇮🇹 Monica Montefalcone, Associate Professor of Marine Ecology at the University of Genoa. 4. 🇮🇹 Giorgia Sommacal, Montefalcone’s daughter and a biomedical engineering student at the University of Genoa. 5. 🇮🇹 Federico Gualtieri, a recent University of Genoa graduate in marine biology and ecology, who had recently completed doctoral work on Maldivian corals under Montefalcone’s supervision. 6. 🇮🇹 Muriel Oddenino, a University of Genoa research fellow working on Montefalcone’s project. If these reported locations are accurate, the theory that they may have become disoriented on their way out, potentially mistaking the entrance to Chamber D for the cave exit, appears plausible. Note: These are not findings from any official investigation.

@dash8x At least if they have got some wetsuit that's also a step forward. Even if they don't have enough budget im happy to give for free wet suit for @MNDF_Official dive operation when they are diving below 50m hypothermia is also an risk to take in such depth .

Looks like MNDF had a long standing dive safety, training and technical gear issue. This was from 4 years ago. It hadn't come to the public attention since no major tragedy had occurred until now.
🇲🇻 Shaff 🇨🇭@ShafrazNaeem

@MNDF_Official This is unbelievable. You guys doing dives deeper than 50m on a single tank!!! No redundancy, no deco gas, no bail outs. So unsafe! Get proper Tec gear and training!

So one of the best professional divers in the country warned about the risks four years ago and no state authorities cared?
🇲🇻 Shaff 🇨🇭@ShafrazNaeem

@najeebshahym @MNDF_Official Doing these dives without proper training and equipment is nothing but risky. They put themselves in the same situation as the missing diver and eventually there are more casualties. Who is going to search for them afterwards? The same guys with lack of training? See the spiral?

A capable soldier lost his life in an unnecessary operation. His family lost their protector and provider. His family might not have the energy to demand answers but I'm sure these questions are bothering them too. Honor his sacrifice with a proper, independent investigation.
Midhuam Saud(米渡)🇲🇻@Midhuamsaud

This FB status by former Head of Marine Police, intentionally or unintentionally, backs the claim that the body of Mahdhy was recovered from inside the cave. If his body was recovered deep inside the cave, the initial claims by Gov that the team realized he was missing only after surfacing + that he went inside the cave with a dive buddy simply cannot be true.

Mahdhee’s dive data is reportedly synced to his phone. MNDF currently has both his phone and dive computer/watch. The family did request the dive data, but it has not been shared yet due to the ongoing investigation, which is understandable. But this raises an important question. Why were military divers using dive computers connected to personal phones in the first place? In missions like this, nothing critical to the operation should depend on personal devices. Dive computers, watches, and if necessary even phones used during duty should be issued and controlled by the military, not privately owned with personal passwords. What happens if an incident occurs and the phone cannot be accessed? Does the investigation stop there? The primary purpose of investigating incidents is to learn from them, correct mistakes, and improve systems to prevent future tragedies. So this should be taken as a lesson too. During official duty, no one should rely on personal gadgets for anything vital to the mission. And this principle should apply across the board ,not just to divers, but to everyone, including the President, ministers, MDs, and senior officials.

Finally, police have started investigating the death of SSGT Mahdhee. The best course of action would still be an independent commission, but this is far better than having no investigation at all. Thank you to all the citizens who pushed for this. The fact that this is happening now is because people refused to stay silent. dhauru.com/post/news/4373…

It’s important to note that the Finnish team located the bodies of the 4 Italian tourists trapped inside the underwater cave on their first attempt. That’s why everyone is asking, why risk the life of our soldiers when they didn’t have the technical knowledge or equipment.
Adhadhu@AdhadhuMV

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has announced that the bodies of four Italian divers, believed to have been trapped in an underwater cave at Vaavu Atoll have been located. Today marks four days since the tourists became trapped in the underwater cave. The military stated that efforts to retrieve the bodies will be carried out during upcoming dives. The rescue operation resumed today after a two-day suspension. "In an operation conducted today by the Police Service in collaboration with foreign expert divers arranged by the Italian government, their bodies have been located. The bodies of the four tourists were found inside the cave where they had been diving," the MNDF stated. As the recovery operation resumed, it is being led by a team of expert cave divers from Finland who were dispatched to the Maldives through the facilitation of the Italian government. So far, only the body of Gianluca Benedetti, the dive team leader who accompanied the tourists, has been recovered. Reports indicate that his body was found during the initial dives on the day they went missing, near the entrance of the cave at a depth of 60 meters. A total of six people have lost their lives in this incident and the subsequent rescue operation. This includes five Italian divers and Staff Sergeant Mohamed Mahudhy, who passed away while participating in the rescue operation.
