A lot of noise over @WSOP low numbers on @espn, so I thought I would level set. First, let me point to the biggest problem: ESPN seems to have decided the executives making decisions on their content and pricing strategy should be gremlins in suits with an MBA, instead of actual product people. They have like eight channels??? All cannibalizing each other, causing viewer exhaustion. Extremely confusing pricing, wtf is ESPN select that used to be ESPN unlimited (wtf is that) that actually, oops, doesn’t get you ESPN or ESPN2. Nowhere on their pricing pages is this spelled out. And oh also you have to log in with a cable provider lol. Yes let’s keep hitching your content to a dying user base, and forcing them there. Oh also there are several bundles with Disney. My friend said they got ESPN on Disney! Why don’t I have it?? My fried doesn’t know. NO ONE KNOWS. Only a gremlin could come up with something so confusing and useless. Where did they spread WSOP? How about across all their fkn channels lol. Live streams on ESPN+ (WTF is that??). Main episodes some on ESPN, some on ESPN2? Gun to your head, what is ESPN2 for in terms of content strategy? POKER PLAYERS LOOKING FOR THIS CONTENT CANT EVEN FIND IT. @Kevmath and @jeffplatt have posted the viewing schedules. Impossible to fkn remember unless I print it out and tape it next to my TV. How do we expect spectators to find it??? Well that’s the other huge problem. Cable tv has lost 60% of their viewers over time. ESPN has lost around 40%. When you couple their self inflicted confusion on top of declining viewership, what do we think is going to happen? Sportscenter morning show gets 75k viewers(!!). Afternoon show gets 325k. NBA today gets 360k. NFL live 470k. And these are established shows, with established audiences at predictable times on predictable channels, for mainstream sports. I heard the episodes were great. I have no idea because I found out ESPN select doesn’t have ESPN OR ESPN2 the night of the first episode (lol). Poker isn’t the problem. The creators of the show aren’t the problem. The overall decline in cable, how channel executives at ESPN are responding to it, and how they chose to air it, are likely the biggest issues. We have no idea how many viewers are out there, but if this were easier to find and buy, it’s possible our viewership is around a Pat McAfee show (520k)
