@jfarmer This is making me wonder what it would look like to have real post-assignments. Like not just rough draft/final draft, but rough draft/final draft/you get your grade and then see how you can incorporate the feedback, drive it home not until it's perfect, but until it's better

@jfarmer Yes! And I think it got even worse in college when I felt like I had less time (I went to uchicago too!) even though the feedback was even better. I re-read some feedback on a humanities essay and was like wow, this was the whole point!

Grades are one of the most backward things about school. "Learn from failure!" we're told, as points are deducted for every mistake. Students should be evaluated on their ability to incorporate feedback, not on their ability to do it perfectly the first time around.

my friend used the term "trickle down therapy" and I haven't stopped thinking about it since one person in a friend group goes to therapy and passes on all the wisdom
