In December 2024, residents in Paw Paw, Michigan, walked outside to find their fields covered in thousands of perfectly formed, hollow snow cylinders known as snow donuts.
These rare structures, also called snow rollers, are nature's way of creating frozen art without any human help.
They only appear when the temperature, wind, and snow moisture align in a very specific way.
Strong winds must catch a layer of wet snow and roll it across a slick surface like ice or crusty powder.
As the snow rolls, it gathers more layers just like a snowball, but the wind creates a unique cylindrical shape instead of a sphere.
The inner layers are usually very weak and thin, which causes them to blow out or collapse.
This leaves behind a hollow center that looks exactly like a giant powdered donut sitting in the middle of a field.
Scientists say that wind speeds must be at least 30 miles per hour to keep the rollers moving without shattering them.
