@JarvisAeneas I mean 30 degrees at the start of June isn’t crazy. It is real and man made but there’s a lot of hysteria and it’s making us weaker

Luigi Cadorna is one of the most reddit things ever. Sure, he was not exactly the greatest General to have ever graced the world, and his successor outshined him in every regard, but taking in consideration he was told to fight a world war with barely any resources, (...)
Mikhail J. Clive - Author 📚🐯@Tyras_Mikhail

>Win against Luigi Cadorna, literally the worst general of WWI >Defeat France and England in the Battle of France because they are fighting the last war >Lose in Bir Hakeim against a garrison of Free French you outnumber literally over 10 to 1 in a Medieval desert fort, who were literally dying of thirst >Lose Africa once the Allies figure out your one simple trick of pretending to retreat and baiting them into ambushes There are two reasons why Rommel is basically deified as "the good Nazi commander": 1) The Allies needed an excuse of why they were so dogshit early war. And "Well, we weren't bad, we were just fighting the reincarnation of Alexander The Great" was convenient. 2) Post-War, West Germany was a vital NATO ally, being the first likely target of a potential Warsaw Pact invasion of Western Europe. And they needed the German people to not be completely demoralized following their defeat and denazification. And so, amongst other myths like "clean and honorable Wehrmacht" and "it took 10 Soviets to kill a single German", Rommel the gentleman genius general was allowed to permeate German culture as a "safe" aspect of WWII they could be proud of.

I want to read an American postwar novel of high literary merit and I really don’t want to hear that I should read Cormac Macarthy. What should I read?

@vicggallus @DimosthenisVas I think it’s an interesting hypothesis but the legend and text is pretty clear on what Homer said it was.

@barkattack @DimosthenisVas Apart from people are claiming it to have happened a lot earlier, although still inspired by Homer's story, it's a time when siege engines were still in use. A time when they wouldn't have thought twice about interpreting it as a siege tower.

@vicggallus @DimosthenisVas Dating doesn’t support that. This vase is from 600bc, siege of Troy was probably around 1100bc. Homer was probably writing in the 8th century. Leads me to suppose the horse depicted here was inspired by Homer rather than a memory of the event.

@Tom_Rowsell I blame Protestantism for any differences in food standards relative to the rest of Europe here. If you look at Protestant regions even at the same latitude as catholic/ orthodox ones the food is generally worse. Lots of good stuff in UK&I though

The main problem with food from this region is that the people here are forgetting how to make it and are eating crap pizzas etc instead. Traditional northern diet is wholesome, healthy and delicious. High in dairy (the world’s favourite cheese comes from England) and seafood (molluscs, crustaceans and the staple of herring)

Let me explain basic economics to the open borders left wingers who "Support the working class". As an economy grows more jobs are created across a wide variety of industries. If you have a set number of workers in a sector then workers pay rises as their skills are more valuable and businesses have to compete for their labour. If you mass import people to fill these jobs it will keep wages low as your bargaining power decreases and as there's an abundance of people competing for jobs and the power to negotiate pay moves back to the business owner away from the worker. If the majority of new jobs being made are filled by immigrants, that's exactly what is happening. You are clueless morons acting as useful idiots for mega corporations endless drive for cheap labour.
Irish Times Business@IrishTimesBiz

Migrant workers account for 61% of jobs growth between 2019 and 2024, says CSO irishtimes.com/business/2026/…

@godspeed_aflame @JudeDeAngulo Currently reading a distant mirror. She writes beautifully. What I’m reading doesn’t clash with other sources for the period. I think historians sometimes just get jealous about these things

sometimes I'll hear about an interesting sounding history book, and then I do some more research and learn that historians actually consider it the stupid book for morons that you should only read if you want to be wrong about everything

@d_foubert If you had to pick one I’d go with Christianity. Rome never conquered the Forests of Germany, Poland or Scandinavia, or the marshes of Ireland and Scotland but these areas are still a part and core of Europe. Caveat is that often times Christianity was bringing Greco Roman stuff
