MIND YOU… WE DIDN'T GET TO VOTE HERE. See the difference. Yes, the pic below is a headache, but CLT ranks 2nd worst commute (Forbes) because drivers rely on cars for every trip & sprawling corridors like this. Looks like we'll also lose 30 or so homes. This must stop.

Pinewood Cemetery segregated Black burials from Elmwood until Fred Alexander tore down the fence in 1969. Nearly 12,000 Black residents rest there, most w/o headstones they couldn’t afford. I-77 sliced Pinewood Cemetery into three—hence "West" Pinewood. youtube.com/watch?v=XKAGtZ…

Displacement concerns around the transit tax were real & worth discussing. Can we have that SAME ENERGY for a $3.2B I-77 toll expansion funded by NCDOT that’ll AGAIN cut into Charlotte’s historic Black neighborhoods, even encroaching on Pinewood Cemetery? Or will we justify it?

@atlanticesque Is it safe to assume you haven’t been? It’s actually pretty remarkable. Name me a small town Greenville’s size where big chains like Warby Parker and Lululemon are LEAVING THE MALL to move to the downtown area because of the amount of foot traffic? I’ll wait.

I love and respect small-city urbanists (I used to be one and still am in spirit) but it says a lot that I see so many posts along the lines of “I can’t believe how dense and walkable <small_city> is! Here’s 4 photos!” and only two of them even suggest it even has an urban core.
Eddie@chacaranda

Currently having my mind blown by the urbanism, vibrancy, and walkability of downtown Greenville, South Carolina. I have never seen this many people walking around a small American city in my life.

Plaza Midwood's precinct, 15, voted in favor of the sales tax increase 845-473. So did neighboring Belmont/Villa Heights (713-330), Merry Oaks (359-214), Country Club Heights (440-215) and Plaza-Shamrock (319-197) NoDa had one of the largest supporting voting blocs (1,167-303)

The Plaza Midwood Merchants Association is not endorsing the sales tax increase for transit. One of the reasons? PM worries Gold Line construction will be disruptive. Plans call for the streetcar to go down Central to Eastland. I did a ton of stories back in 2018 about construction of the streetcar in Elizabeth. Here’s one of them: wsoctv.com/news/9-investi…

Richmond has had free buses since the pandemic. There have been zero layoffs with mass transit workers in the 5 years since Richmond implemented this and Ish’s stance that a public good for some inevitably results in a drop in quality of life for others is an all too common fallacy that so many buy into. Richmond receives their funding for free transportation from VA DOT grants and other federal funding. The question is never how will the government subsidize a public good. The question is will they. The money is always there.

Marc showed Ish A LOT of grace during the Zohran Mamdani segment. Marc knew from last time that if he turned it into another debate that the Muffin Man would go mute for a few months over going viral again 😬
