The packages use different terminals. You need to adjust your pad to match the manufacturer specs, at least when you mass produce your PCB. For hobby purpose this is fine, but in the long run you will have a lower yield. Look at the dimensions: vishay.com/docs/45199/vjc… vishay.com/docs/20035/dcr… Both 0402, same manufacturer. I don't know why kiCAD has the same footprint for 0201 caps and res, but I guess the difference would be to small to notice.

@basroth Ping on this. Also, can you explain why the 0201s are the same size for R and C?

If you use the KiCAD 0402 resistor footprint for every passive you'll have an easier time routing but you might not notice why

@basroth geht leider schon ne ganze weile so. Würth hat auch sehr nette DC/DC module aber die Preise sind komplettes no-go. da zahl ich lieber 35ct für den Diodes und nen induktor für 25ct.

Nerd Intermezzo: I just love modern electronics. You can now get tiny DC/DC controllers that literally only take 2 more parts over a simple voltage regulator and give you 2A output, a 3.8-32V input range, stellar efficiency and built-in EMI suppression. I used the 5V fixed variant of this little bugger in one of my designs and it is almost forbidden how easy it is to implement. I know many are stuck with their favorite parts from 20 years ago but man are you missing out.
