I find it kind of concerning that every commercial supermarket in North America has a secret tunnel connecting to the Denver International Airport.

it’s so funny that in 2026 we all just understand Mulholland Drive. i just saw a buzz feed style clickbait post on instagram just casually explaining it like everyone knows. it was not like this in 2006

Infinite Jest is weird because it is underrated, appropriately rated, and overrated, depending on whom you ask.

@maoistlandlord_ @Frog98_5 This is projection again. Thomas clearly had his army of child soldiers use their Mommies' credit cards to buy his merch, and they were brainwashed into clicking his Izzat Loss counter back in March.

@JeanGreige yeah i recall reading ~300pg books around 3rd grade. i had friends who read at that age too. we would recommend books to each other, read them, talk about them, etc.

Little Women is 450 pages and I read it in 3rd or 4th grade. A Wrinkle in Time is 250 pages and I seem to remember we read it in 3rd grade as a class. Prince and the Pauper is 320 pages and I read that in 3rd or 4th grade as well. What is happening in the world?

@Shadow_ofaDoubt @HECU_snowfox IMO take out the codex entries and leave it to be inferred through scattered environmental details. The problem with the Doom story isn't ONLY that it is inappropriate for Doom, it's also that it sucks, and is told through uninteresting exposition dumps.

Doomguy literally put his fist through the story exposition in the intro to the game. This was already exceeding the amount of cutscene that should have been in the game. If the future releases had similarly kept the lore as it should be, vague and locked behind codex entries you need to read on purpose, no one would complain.

"I love Doom 2016, but I'd never never ever read its codex entries!" is a frighteningly common sentiment I've noticed on here, and it explains why so many people think everything after 2016 is some narrative hat trick that was never set up.

@denpanopticon Immortality is technically a mystery thriller (with a heavy lean into metafiction and supernatural horror) but the gameplay is unlike any game I know of. It's not structured around meeting explicit goals; roleplaying, puzzle solving, challenges of technical proficiency, etc.

is there a videogame that could be considered, like, not genre fiction?

@alittleyareli i think play is kind of a narrative, so tetris for example is in the genre of puzzle. Also, Nier and Portal are very much science fiction and made with the intent of being sf

@alittleyareli @denpanopticon Wouldn't Portal be sci-fi? Kentucky Route Zero is Southern Gothic Magical Realism whichisn't "genre fiction" so it qualifies IMO but I could be misinterpreting the question.

@denpanopticon Portal, Tetris, Kentucky Route Zero, Nier: Automata, all come to mind for me unless i'm misunderstanding your question? like are we talking about genre as in video game mechanics + hardware descriptors or like narrative constructions and expectations

@ObbeVermeij @__silent_ Is this different in Vice City? Maybe a mod allows it, but I had a Seasparrow and Hunter in the Hyman Condos without issue

@gracecthdralprk At this angle the Tristero horn looks like a hanged woman. I do think there’s something to the speculation that the men in black who appear in the end are a call back (or maybe not!) to the assassins in The Courier’s Tragedy, who are also dressed all in black.

I started out hating it, but it grew on me. He is a prose stylist that pisses me off to read because I’ll never be that good at writing. The central conspiracy is nonsense but enthralling. I dislike his Mad Magazine, Harvard Lampoon prep school humor and unseriousness, not for me

Gave me a deeper appreciation for Trotsky. Lenin comes off poorly personally, though a much more level-headed and admirable figure post-revolution. A downer ending, with Trotsky getting into some truly far afield theoretical debates he comes off poorly in. A sorcerer’s apprentice
