Except that total tax rate means nothing since tax laws have changed considerably on multiple occasions over the last 8 decades. A 90% rate in the 50's can't be compared to what a 90% rate would be today under our current tax laws. What you need to do is look at the overall effective tax rate in which case it has gone down over the years but not significantly. Plus nobody should be paying half of what they earn to the tax man.
