Arsenal’s positional play is elite. Similar to PSG, Bayern, Barca etc. But Arsenal’s open-play creativity is nowhere as impressive as theirs. Why? Is it just quality? Or Is it just down to injuries? A bit of both, I would say, but this is Arteta’s squad. He built it. It’s also down to the balance in the wide triangles. Don’t sit here and tell me Calafiori-Rice-Eze on the left and Timber-Saka-Madueke on the right wouldn’t be special creatively. There are plenty of other solutions, too. Havertz or Jesus can play in the #10. Remember, it’s about making Arsenal as devastating as possible in open play. That doesn’t exclusively centre around breaking down a low block. It also incorporates transitions. Early on in the season, away at Newcastle, Eze fired a pass from the edge of his own box deep into Newcastle’s half after Newcastle lost the ball high. He found Saka who found Gyökeres and Arsenal won a penalty. How many times have we seen that level of transitional threat this season? Very, very rarely. And why is that? Well, to get out, you need players with power to play long-range passes into space. Eze is Arsenal’s iteration of Bruno Fernandes or Trent Alexander-Arnold in that sense. Any time he gets the ball on the left side of the pitch he opens the opposition up like it’s nothing, whether he is low or high. Plus, on top of that quality, you need powerful and willing runners (Saka, Gyökeres, Madueke, Martinelli). Guys like Trossard and Rice can attempt Eze’s transitional passes, but they don’t have his power with minimal backlift. That’s the difference with these elite creators. They ping the ball with insane power and accuracy with little-to-no wind up. I have been calling for Eze to play on the left since the very beginning of the season. Arteta’s failure to use him there has been his biggest mistake this campaign. It has hampered Arsenal’s open play creativity and made the team overly reliant on players who we already know are not reliable elite-level attackers (Trossard and Martinelli). Many months ago, I said that Arsenal will win the league if they play Eze on the left because of the transformational effect it would have on the rest of the team. But, in the same breadth, I also said that the failure to use him there will see the run-in be extremely tight. Too close to call, even. And, here we are…
