My dad was gifted a used kindle when I was like 12 and he 🏴‍☠️ed a bunch of books for me to read because we could not afford the amount of books I was reading and the first book on there that I read was wuthering heights and it made me fall in love with classical literature
moon 🖇️🇫🇷🇲🇦@moondiariess

all this discourse on piracy when i lived over a decade of my life loving to read but not being able to afford books but ever since i learnt i can 🏴‍☠️ books i was finally able to tap into my love for reading so it's genuinely sad seeing authors say we don't hv a "right to read"

@SUICID3PACT @liteararytea An author must earn out their advance before being paid anything additional so most are unlikely to earn beyond the advance. Multiple books a year is only possible when producing ai generated slop or at the very least unedited slop.

@bbvvamvam @liteararytea No one ever claimed this was once a year, if they publish multiple books they get multiple advances, crazy I know. and as someone in poverty, i *have* lived off of 10k a year. It fucking sucks, it is possible

@PomboPalomaRat @balkanwhispers There is definitive evidence that piracy hurts small authors. Copyright laws afford the same rights to small creators as big businesses. Asking small authors to reject practices that protect their work from being stolen by big corporations shows your total ignorance.

@bbvvamvam @balkanwhispers they are expected to undertand that copyright is not their friend, it is in fact a major enemy of art and creativity and it mostly benefits disney and the likes they are expected to not be so ignorant as to believe that piracy numbers actually affect sell numbers significantly

the piracy discourse is meaningless because there are systemic failures that lead to authors being underpaid for their labour but instead of doing something about it they get mad at random people online

@bbvvamvam you have no followers, all your 42 replies on your account are on this topic, you are probably an alt account of an author. good luck though ✌🏼

@violetsgrimoire This conversation is obviously aimed at western readers who pirate for convenience. Using afghan women to justify your thievery is so weird.

@ImRamudaClone @bokutosayswhaat Traditionally published authors don’t have that kind of control over their books. Indie authors who self publish pay thousands to have their book edited and get it ready to be published. Many ebooks are 99¢. If you must pirate, support those who support piracy.

@bbvvamvam @bokutosayswhaat Yes, I said many, I never said all. The thing is, I understand not outright supporting piracy but at the very least I think you should understand why it happens and why people do it. Other solutions, as I said, is offering to ship everywhere/dynamic prices

I don’t care about book piracy discourse coming from American authors because they will never understand what it’s like living in a third world country with no public libraries, books that costs 3x your salary, or bookstores that don’t even have recent books in their inventory

@DaveZajicek5 The shipping costs twice as much as the book itself. 6000 HUF is a day's worth of salary here. "So buy it in Hungarian." Most books I read are not translated to Hungarian. This one is. It costs more than double. And then the shipping adds another 1-2.5 thousand.

@Memoirsepiphany A 30 year old justifying pirating books by bringing up poor rural teenagers.. how disingenuous. There is so much data showing piracy is first and foremost about convenience. Also your tone is so condescending. Calling a woman author “honey” yuck!

@evieereader 0.1% of all authors are millionaires.. Most authors make like 10k a year. You’re not entitled to their work.

I won’t argue with you if you refuse to check their privilege if YOU can pay that much for one book and don’t have to think about what else you could be doing with that money great but I won’t be going back and forth over millionaires they’re not missing my money I promise you
