An appropriate birthday present on my uncle's birthday today. A federal judge ruled that President Trump and the Kennedy Center Board acted unlawfully in renaming the Kennedy Center. The judge held that only Congress can change the Center's name and blocked the planned two-year closure. I know they'll probably appeal and the story isn't over, but for today let’s celebrate a great birthday gift.

“Bring her here tomorrow.” For what? “So she can take a shower and eat a real meal.” The next day, I almost backed out because I thought the girl would feel embarrassed. But when I asked, she looked at me like she was trying not to cry before she even answered. At my house, my mom acted completely normal. No pity. No awkwardness, She handed her a towel and said: “Bathroom’s all yours, sweetheart. Take your time.” That girl stayed in the shower for nearly an hour. At one point my mom knocked softly on the door. “You okay in there?” A shaky voice answered: “Yeah… sorry.” When she finally came out, her hair was wet and brushed for the first time since I’d known her. But her eyes were bloodshot. My mom pretended not to notice. Dinner was spaghetti, garlic bread, and sweet tea. That girl ate faster than anyone I’d ever seen in my life. My mom smiled gently and said: “Slow down, baby. There’s plenty more.” She had four servings. Four. And I remember realizing then that she probably wasn’t just neglected. She was hungry. All the time.

Before Congress, there was The Citadel. I was the first woman to graduate from the Corps of Cadets. Nothing was handed to me there. In fact, I didn't even tell my father I had applied and was accepted until after the fact. This is the place where we salute the American flag, not burn it to the ground. This is where you go to learn grit, discipline, and to be strong. This is where I learned what I was made of. And those lessons have never left me. The Citadel prepared me for a lifetime of service. I carry it with me every single day. Serving South Carolina has been and always will be the honor of my lifetime.
