I say it all the time but I hate this. City’s fans are mostly working class from Manchester, they were at Wembley a few weeks ago, they’re there every year, they go deep into CL every year. There’s only so much anyone can afford. The issue here is FA Cup semi finals at Wembley

@bifana_bifana I would be 'indifferent' to 89 of the 92 clubs winning anything (bar a few petty grudges built up over the years). Arsenal/United/Liverpool are different as the fans are insufferable and insecure, obssessed with being 'big clubs' and all the arrogance that goes with it.

Plenty of reasons to prefer City over Arsenal & City over Liverpool & Utd too, but the big brains are going at it hammer and tongues to find a theory. How about Arsenal produce anti-football unworthy of the highest prize? Plus the online fanbase are the least grounded of the lot?

Have wondered about this. Here’s my theory: I think it’s sort of the opposite. But it is born, at least in part, in the place you’re talking about. I don’t think it’s love; I think it’s a kind of indifference. By which I mean, it’s like City don’t count and people — who see them (whether rightly or wrongly) as operating on a different plane and with different rules etc — are kind of resigned to them and have reached an acceptance. So, for fans of teams like, say, Liverpool or (even) United (despite being rivals in Manchester), if City win the league: shrug, yeah, whatever, what you gonna do? If this year Arsenal or in previous years Liverpool win the league — who you are competing with on the same level, who are your peers/challengers, for want of a better word, whose title win would be as good as yours would have been — it actually does hurt and it does mean something. It’s a “real” title win…and thus, by extension, a real title loss for your team. And I suspect that goes beyond just fans of those teams too to become more generalized. I know, I know, plenty of people will really dislike this, from both sides of the argument, and I might have to hide from the @s now as they all shout at me, but it’s about people’s perceptions and I reckon there’s something in that. Anyway, sorry: a long tweet. Just a theory.

@KingKenny_20 @StevenMcinerney No, but they won multiple league titles. He was a great player and his style of play suited cup competitions where he could be the hero on any given day. But that doesn't suit a league campaign as you can't deliver a title trying to do it yourself. It's unsustainable.

@KingKenny_20 @StevenMcinerney If he was as good as he's made out, given the quality he had around him, he should have been able to deliver a title or two. Hero complex can work in cup games because one off games suit him, but you can't carry a team through a whole season when he wanted it to all be about him.
