Thinking about active travel /want to cut carbon emissions/stanning public transit while studying & working in UKM. Here’s a guide: I’ll start with buses, walking & cycling. At the end of this thread, I will put all the ‘saluran betul’ for complaints at relevant authorities. 1/n

I simultaneously believe that we need more rigorous, credible evaluations of social policy AND that some current evaluation systems would be better transformed into good monitoring. I just assigned my students my favorite reading on this topic. ssir.org/articles/entry…

Ernest is: on transit! 🚌🚇🚅
While the new initiatives are welcomed, the gov on the other hand repeated the point of MY50 being a "subsidy and Malaysians should utilise it" is ignorant of reality when transit remains unreliable and inaccessible for many while petrol remains cheaper than bottled water

Cities with high public transport ridership have 20 buses for every km of rail. We have five.

This is gonna be unpopular for sure, but I feel that we should openly discuss the data, since @hannahyeoh has got us all talking about traffic. This is daily RapidRail ridership from 1 Sep 2025, all the way up to yesterday (thank you MOT, for the great open data). Thus far, we observe essentially zero rise in usage of RapidRail. That's not what we would want or expect to see if the country really is responding to global conditions. To me, this is expected, and the explanation is obvious + simple: 1) As long as the price of petrol remains (heavily) subsidised, consumers are going to continue making decisions based on that price of RM1.99. 2) We can talk about WFH, berjimat-cermat, bersiap sedia all we want, but ultimately, economic incentives will dominate. 3) The quota reduction from 300L to 200L does essentially nothing. PM's own statement suggests it shouldn't affect 90% of consumers. So, if gov wants meaningful behavioural change, there is only one way—consumers have to 'internalise' (economic term meaning 'account for') the actual cost of what they are buying, which ultimately means floating the price of petrol. As long as that isn't done, everything else is just making tweaks without addressing the root cause. ----- Important note: My post above is FULLY agnostic about what the government SHOULD do. I know there are other economic and political considerations. I am simply saying that we should not be surprised at continued jams and minimal impact of other solutions (WFH, 'nudges', etc), as long as the primary economic incentive (namely fuel for RM1.99) remains in place.

@Thevesh @hannahyeoh You know what will work.. 1. 30% discount on tolls before 8.00 am 2. 30% discounts if you park before 8.00 am. Malaysians are money minded. After 8 am it’s premium

Czech automaker Škoda created first bicycle bell to penetrate noice-cancelling headphones. They tested 100s of headphones and found a low frequency (750 to 780 Hz) that anti-noise algos can’t suppress. Bell is mechanical and uses an irregular hammer mechanism. This might be the most European tech story ever and feels inevitable that an audio firm will create an anti-anti-noise-cancelling-bell headphones. *** Link: youtu.be/zDaVPfpQvPI?si…

I just look at the WFH notice. Thankfully I don't live more than 8km from the office. Cause it'll definitely pissed me off if I'm required to work at home even if I cycle to work daily.

Taking out the new pannier for a ride this Sunday morning. I thought I'm gonna go to Kinokuniya Damansara(there's 25% off on books) but I know I'll spend more money than I have so I ended up taking a ride to a nearby coffee shop to read.

Some academics who denounced the idea of objectivity and declared themselves activists are for some reason shocked that policymakers and the public now view them not as trusted, objective scientists but as...activists.
